Definitely need to be handy with a spanner for bangernomics to work - I considered it at one stage but remembered I'm allergic to spanners

No but I can't see why all those repairs would need doing at the same time. Would you be doing them if you were trading the car back to Cargiant or any other rip off merchant rather than having it for your daughter? I think not.;)0 -

I've had a succession of older Japanese cars -- none of which failed MOTs or required much in the way of repairs.

Most 3 year old cars, retailing in the multiples of thousands or even tens of thousands, is not where I believe bangernomics is positioned. IMHO, bangernomics is much further down the life cycle of the vehicle.0 -
..There are indeed big savings to be made from bangernomics, but you need the ability to be able to spot a decent car at auction and do most of your own servicing to make it work properly......
But you can save money building your own house, if you are a builder !
This only works if you have these skills and cannot otherwise use the time you spend tinkering under the bonnet to earn more money than the labour charge of the service. Even then, you have to drive around in an old(er) car.0 -

Exactly my point.
The three year old car is the first I have bought in some time that wasn't bangernomics (the previous four or five being £1500 or less). The newer car has given me as much trouble as those cheap cars all put together, all in the space of a year.
Just because a car is cheap doesn't make it unreliable.
The short-circuiting of bangernomics refers to cars like the Lacetti. At the same age as my Focus (which was worth between £4 and £5000 when I bought it, although I did not pay that) cars like the Lacetti are worth £2-2500. For a cheap runaround, that is where my money would be going.
It is possible to buy a perfectly serviceable, economical and reasonably safe car for under two grand these days that is almost guaranteed to give five years of decent service. You just have to ignore the badge.0 -
Focus, Astra, Golf, Corolla, etc. 1.4/1.6 petrol should be efficient enough.
NO! If you are going to get a Golf (1998-2004 model recommended) get the 1.9 TDI (diesel.) They come in a variety of 5 engines ranging from 70BHP-150BHP. They all average 45MPG in the city, and 60MPG on the motorway. The 1.6 petrol on the other hand averages 25MPG in the city and 45 on the motorway.
I would suggest looking out for the 110BHP TDI as the insurance group is 8E, has loads of torque, and does a combined of 55mpg and tax is £190 a year. (I know, expensive, but your fuel and maintenance savings will cover for it.) Plus, VW diesels are bulletproof. Fact.
You can pick up pretty decent ones on autotrader for £1,800. Ignore millage on these cars. If you do find one you like with high miles, it means nothing if it has full service history. I drive my brothers golf every once in a while. Believe it or not it has 270,000 miles on the clock and looks/feels brand new. As long as everything was serviced on time properly, these engines are bulletproof.0 -
Adams1, the OP is only doing 100 miles a week. If the diesel is £500 more expensive than the petrol for the same age (and it will be), at 40 vs 55MPG you'd need to drive the car around 13,000 miles to make that £500 back -- taking the OP two and a half years.
To have saved £500, add another 13,000 miles to that -- making it five years, on an OLD car, before any appreciable saving is made.
Not worth it. And they are conservative figures.
And while the TDi engine may well be bulletproof, the rest of the Golf is not -- it deteriorates at the same rate as anything else on the market.0 -
