Let me just reiterate a point I have to make a lot these days......

You CANNOT save money buy buying a new (or nearly new) car.

Let me just reiterate a point I have to make to counteract yours a lot these days - you CAN in some cases, I HAVE :rotfl:

just my opinion here but what about a fiat panda, my wife has one, we are a family of four, I'm a big guy, 6' tall and on the heavy side and can sit in the back of the car no problem, both kids get in no bother and have been shopping for many months now, weekly shopping goes in the boot no bother.

She only uses it for a few miles each day and about once a week get a longer run and over the summer months it goes on longer runs for the day with loads of equipment in it for helping to run highland games.(not I hasten to add a caber for tossing!!)
Thanks to all the competition posters.

I find it hard to believe, perhaps in extreme cases like moving from a large relatively new high value vehicle to something worth the same or less.

Would anyone be able to sit behind you if you were driving though? :D

I do like the Panda, mind. Would own one instead of my Picanto if the drivers footwell was more suited to my size 10s (and the finance deals were better)

Depreciation/non existant MOTs/repairs under warranty instead of out of my pocket - £75pcm. 55+MPG instead of 30, £30 tax instead of £235, insurance group 2 instead of 11 (makes a big difference if you're 20 with 0 NCB).

Kilty, surprisingly my youngest daughter can, and thats with legs sticking out from car seat, but I can't stand driving the panda, my wife does though and thats what counts, I just enjoy the car from the passenger seat I have my own car which suits my size a bit better - a Hummer! lol:rotfl:

Less environmental impact than a Prius too apparently..... ;)

Though many would argue that as a myth, the only "straight" figure's ive seen actually support the claim.

You CANNOT save money buy buying a new (or nearly new) car.

Sure you could get 45mpg compared to your old 30mpg, but how much are you spending in order to get those savings? do you do enough miles to EVER cover the thousands you'll spend? and let's not forget depreciation in there too!

Let's say for example to spend £100 a month on petrol now, at 45mpg you'd be spending £75 a month.
At £25 a month saving it would take 2 years to save just £600.... Maybe with repairs (to the old car) taken into account it might be more in the region of £1600 saved over 2 years.
But when you've spent £5000+ on the new car, your really not saving anything.

You CANNOT save money buy buying a new (or nearly new) car.

Simply want a new car? go ahead!! there's no shame in saying "I just want a nice shiny new car", there's no need to disguise it with excuses like fuel economy and saving the environment (yes you Pruis owners).

So with that said, you might as well go get something nice, something you really like! You can also ignore all the "fuel saving" sales patter the salesmen are throwing around right now.
It's a lot harder to bu!!!!!!!! someone into a sale if their only criteria is "do I like this car?".

As my Zafira developed more expensive faults and has cost me on average £500 to get it through each of the last 3 MOT's I do not see how I can not save money with a newer car.
I know the initial outlay is expensive but I have no choice now. I now need a car as I do not have one -and I wish I did have £5000+ to spend! :rotfl:
I am not looking for a 'nice shiny new car'.

The 15 miles per day is on work days. We do use the car during school holidays etc for longer trips with the kids / to visit family in the south etc.
I do sometimes (about twice a month) have to travel for training with my job. This can be anywhere up to 30 miles each way, and I can not claim expenses or get any money back for petrol etc.

Thanks to all for the suggestions - something newer with less miles will hopefully cost less on a monthly basis to run. I will keep looking on autotrader / garage web sites etc to see what I can find.

OK, OK, in most cases you won't save any money.

If you own a gas-guzzler, or something that is terminally unreliable, then yes you might save money.

But downsizing from a 1.8 Vectra to a 1.2 Corsa? Nah. Very unlikely that you'd save any appreciable amount of cash for some years, unless you were prepared to go around in something older as well.

And 100 or so miles a week is my definition of a job that needs nothing more than a respectable older car for £1500 to get you about. Anything more is extravagance IMO. Hence the Lacetti suggestion

I take it you have never ran a business, repairs to a car are a business expense, makes sence to sort out all the big money items on the car before giving it to your daughter.

Nothing deceptive about running your business in a tax efficient manner, just common sense.

Even repairs that may not need doing?

Are you really this slow or are you trying to be deliberately annoying.

Do you go on loads of forums making stupid comments, trying to make an issue with a "tongue in cheek" comment?

But lets think about the situation we are presented with.
