My set up is pretty much the same as Sunni. The only significant addition I have made is Sandboxie.
All of my browsing is done inside the sandbox. I go outside it only to update the browser.
It makes me feel very safe knowing that any malware is going to be trapped inside the sandbox and can just be deleted.
Am I right to be thinking so highly of it?

The chances of defender finding anything that avast/malwarebytes misses are pretty slim.

I have the same security but with the addition of Superantispyware free http://www.superantispyware.com/ and SpywareBlaster free which works nicely in the background http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
  • I use the NoScript Firefox add-on to protect my against 'infected' or bogus websites. It stops things like Javascript and Flash running unless I say so on each website I visit.

To be honest, alongside Microsoft Security Essentials (and formerly the free version of AVG) and a bit of common sense/careful web browsing, it's all I use and I have not had a virus or any malware infections in over 5 years.

I have however had to fix many friends and families PC's!

Ok so maybe I should download those other two programs as well?

As for the firefox add on I must have a look for NoScript and install it, never knew about that so thanks :)

    No.
MSE and AVG are alternatives to Avast. They will clash with each other and cause you problems. Only install one. In my opinion, stick with Avast.

She was referring to SAS and spywareblaster. She should read the link in post 5, but people expect you to rewrite everything or they don't bother ;)
OK. It didn't read like that to me. That's the danger of not quoting I guess.
I missed your reference to Sandboxie in that link as well, so plead guilty as charged. :o:D

If you start overloading it with resident security software, it won't be fast for long

Yeah think I'll just stick with Avast and Malwarebytes and install the Firefox NoScript, we can't be having a new laptop running slow and me pulling my hair out lol

also install Adblock Plus for firefox aswell, that will stop malware infected adverts and also just plain stop annoying adverts aswell.

(though I must say most websites get all their money from the adverts so if you use a site you really love then you can disable the adblocker on just the sites you love inorder to preserve their income)
