Good luck with the meal.. Just don't go into a shop in Scotland and ask for swedes or you will get the wrong thing.
We all evolve - get on with it
  • Haggis, Neeps and Tatties. Traditional Burns night fare :D

Neeps are most definitely turnip. And the best wild Haggis is to be found roaming free on the Cairngorms ;)
I have no more money to give - all you companies out there - do your worst - I give in!! :(
  • Just got my tesco food club magazine and it says:

"swede is closely related to kohlrabi, cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage. It is native to Sweden, hence its name, and was introduced to Scotland, from where it spread throughout England and America. In some parts of the UK the swede is known as yellow turnip ('neeps' in Scotland)"

So there you go :D (Mr T said so :rotfl:)

My German wife makes kohlrabi, which we bring back with us, and it's lovely, and a great alternative to the usual fare, but does anyone know where it can be found in this country? We haven't seen it anywhere.
  • Neeps and a Tatties
    Good with Haggis
Here in Northumberland, Neeps are swede or Baigy, as we call em.
    Turnips, yuck wouldn't touch em.
Swedes best cooked boiled for 20 mins and mashed with a potato masher.
Great with Poultry or HAGGIS. XX

Also very good cooked together with carrots [neeps take slightly longer to cook sometimes] and then mashed together with a bit of butter & pepper. Sweetens them up a bit and they can sometimes be watery otherwise - yum

yes ckerrd you will get the wrong thing because here in scotland your top picture is a swede turnip, they are lovely if you get them straight from the field and they are grown by farmers for cattle feed in the winter

My boyfriend has been mocking me for years because I call the big purple things turnips.

So it's not just me :).

We used to hollow them out to make halloween lanterns when I was a kid. No Fancy smancy pumpkins in those days

I get them with my organic box (from a farm in Fife) a little too often for my liking.. I must admit they strike fear into my heart:eek: .. what does your wife do with them? !
