I've read that leeks are a good crop to follow potatoes so I think I'm going to try that. I also read that carrots can go in after them, but I can't remember where I read that. It would be good to have some advice on this from experienced gardeners too.

I am putting pumpkin and squash after the first earlies. Not sure if that is ok, but that's what I have thought off.

  • a third of my veg plot is dedicated to spuds - and when the first lot get lifted i will plant out my leeks - the next space will give way to overwintering greens - the area where the mainss are occupying will have the autumn planted garlic and overwintering onions
saving money by growing my own - much of which gets drunk

I have leeks and salad leaves planned for when I lift my first earlies.

When does your first lot start coming out then?

I've always struggled with this, as where I grow my pots, I can't grow any onion family, otherwise leeks would be the obvious choice. Courgettes I've done before, but I wouldn't have thought there was time for squashes.

I'm going for leeks, squashes, beans and sweetcorn.......down south though so we have a long season.

I've sown some celeriac seeds at home, and they don't need planting out until June onwards, so I'm planning to grow them and leeks in the space once my earlies are out. I've not done this before though so it's an experiment for me!

I'm aiming for salads (various lettuces, radishes, spring onions) and fast growing things like turnips (the baby ones, not swedes). I still have space in my onions bed for leeks this year, but have often put them in after the spuds and that works well. Or having sweetcorn started in pots to plant out when spuds come up works ok too, for firsts.

If you have early pots, you might have time with squashes, but maincrops possibly not.
