advice on flights to New York

I have only ever booked a Ryanair flight and am a bit lost when it comes to anything more complex.
I have to make a decision about when to go to New York for a special MRI that cannot be done here. It isnt overly urgent as it would only affect my treatment in the longer term
So, was thinking would find out cheapest time of year to fly to New York for myself and OH.
Then, we thought, why not splurge and go end June and early July adding on a holiday to New England.
BUT won't be able to book for another couple of weeks as have to contact radiologist first, work out when best for her etc. So, will be booking late and going at an expensive time
I would like some advice whether I try to use something like Skyscanner or ring one of the companies that specialises - the ones that advertise in newspapers.
Can anyone advise on what sort of ball park figure we would be looking at paying and roughly what it would be if I just went by myself say in November. All tips for cheapest flights very welcome.
Many thanks

It will be a lot cheaper in November, possibly just two thirds the price in late June. Delta have cheap fares to New York from just over £400 but BA is already over £550 for late June to early July and most others are £500 and above. Travel mid week for the lowest fares, and from London where at least there is some competition. Flights from Birmingham, Manchester etc are usually a lot more expensive due to the lack of competition.
