Asda Mobile PAYG sim card

Please bear with me - never had a contract phone before :rotfl:

I've got 2 months remaining of my pay monthly contract with Vodafone and have decided to go for the ASDA PAYG next.

When my contract ends, do i then own that phone?

I've heard that the price of ASDA payg goes up at the end of May. Can i buy the sim card now then start to use it at the end of June (when my contract ends)

I presume once you buy a sim card (4p texts/8p calls), they can't then put the price up?

Also want to port my phone number too. Can yo do that from a contract to payg?

sorry if these are silly questions. thanks

Hi, I've had ASDA Mobile for a couple of years on their 4p texts 8p calls rate and I got sent a text saying my tariff is going up. So it's going up for everyone. Hope that helps with your decision.

It's still advertised as 4p texts/8p calls on their website. presumably if you buy a sim, they couldn't then suddenly increase the tarrif

Wrong presumptions for a PAYG deal.
  • I was recently a Asda mobile customer. its going up for all. however have a look at icardmobile they use vodafone network too. currently landlines 1p texts 4p and mobiles 5p. free voicemail and free on network allowances. same features as asda and vodafone using same network. no data though

PAYG providers can do whatever they wish when it comes to price as there is no contract with the customer.

    Some alternatives -

    Ikea Mobile - Calls 9p Text 6p - http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_GB/campaigns/mobilefamily.html

    Tesco Lite - Calls 8p Text 4p - http://phone-shop.tesco.com/tesco-mobile/help-and-support/call-charges-payg-litetariff.aspx

    GiffGaff - Calls 8p Text 4p - http://giffgaff.com/index/offer

Be prepared though for all the low cost networks to follow Asda and put their prices up.

Few good SIM only rolling 30 day contracts at the moment -

    Carphone Warehouse [Talk Mobile] - £5.11 per month [100 minutes, 100 text, 100MB] - http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/buy/TALKMOBILE-PAYM-SIMCARD-TK5S-FCON

T-Mobile - £6 per month [100 minutes, 100 texts plus your choice of either 500MB, Unlimited text, Unlimited landline etc,] - http://www.chitterchatter.co.uk/simonly.php
    :dance:Quidco Payments In 2011 - £724.21

    June: £43.15/July: £51.22/August: £90.60/September: £29.75/October: £284.07/November: £171.08/December: £29.22

PAYG is subject to price changes both up and down just like any other telephony product. When it comes to May your be charged the new higher rates.

Yes you get to keep the phone.

Yes you can port your number from contract to payg.

Yes you can get a sim now and start using it in June, but i expect a number of suppliers may up there prices by then so you might want to wait to see how things pan out.

I've got 2 months remaining of my pay monthly contract with Vodafone and have decided to go for the ASDA PAYG next.

you can call vodafone 30 days before your contract finishes to give your 30 days notice, they will try to sell you many deals to lock you into a 24 month contract, so be prepared for that.

When my contract ends, do i then own that phone?

yep although it may need unlocking so can be used on other networks, chances are that vodafone will unlock it for free

I've heard that the price of ASDA payg goes up at the end of May. Can i buy the sim card now then start to use it at the end of June (when my contract ends)

yep you can buy an ASDA sim anytime for it to be ready for june

I presume once you buy a sim card (4p texts/8p calls), they can't then put the price up?

nope as PAYG is no contract the network can do whatever they like, but it also works to the customers advantage as because there is no contract there is nothing stopping you leaving their network at anytime.

Also want to port my phone number too. Can yo do that from a contract to payg?

yep when you call up vodafone explain that you want to take your number with you when your 30days notice is up, they will tell you what happens and organise a PAC for you, you then call ASDA up and tell them you have a PAC, they will ask some questions (what is the PAC and what is the mobile number you are looking to move) and they will sort everything for you within 24 hrs.

sorry if these are silly questions. thanks
