It's funny as i was reading your post the Corolla Verso (or just Verso as they are called now) sprang to mind and that was also your suggestion at the end of the post. They should be within your budget and a decent bet. Corolla's were one of the last reliable Toyotas before the build quality took a nosedive. Likewise the Roomster gets rave reviews and should be affordable.
Out of leftfield is a Citroen Berlingo, basically a van with windows but I presume you want something a bit less spartan.
The tino is basically a 5 door beefed up almera so by that token there's the Golf+ (or was it the Touran). Basically a fatter Golf.

I would shortlist 3 cars and test drive them all before deciding. Which 3? Well the Verso and Roomster for a start and then maybe a Scenic. Cars are so much a personal thing and first drive impressions count a lot. When you have decided haggle, haggle and then walk away, cars aren't selling so go back 24 hours later and haggle again before buying.

Indeed Emell, the Zafira is very safe, we have had over 100 written off in the London Amulance Service, including one in South London that is pictured on YouTube in a series of still photos.

But the reliability problems relating to the CDTi engine and the DPF mean I could never recommend a diesel one, plus the blind spot caused by the A Pillars is a serious safety issue, much worse in the mk2 than the mk1.

This is enough to rule one out for me, though the petrol ones are apparently much more reliable, but that blind spot rules it out, we had Health & Safety notice about the blind spot, but we have bought too many to get rid, they are also bright yellow!!!!!!! So can't really be sold easily.

Just goes to show how much testing and evaluation took place before vast amounts of public money was spent.
