What to choose to replace Nissan Almera Tino?

Hi everyone

This is my first time on this board but I'm a regular over on the house prices board. I'm after some advice about buying a car and thought somebody on here might be able to help.

Until last week I was happily driving a 1.8litre 02 reg Nissan Almera Tino and I was hoping it would last at least another year. However, somebody crashed into me from behind in traffic last week, the chassis is bent and the insurance company have written it off. I've got a second opinion who agrees that the chassis damage is beyond economical repair.

So I need to choose a new-to-me second hand car in a hurry before my insurers want their hire car back. The Tino was the right size for my family, so I'm looking for something fairly similar in terms of capacity, fuel economy and insurance class. I liked the high back end and spacious boot.

Reliability is very important to me because I'm a lone parent and need the car to get my kids to school and myself to work. Safety is also very important to me. My kids have already lost one parent in a car accident. Afterwards, I looked up his car (Ford Mondeo) on the Euro NCAP and discovered it rated poor for driver torso - which is where all his injuries were. So the next car I buy needs to be something that will keep us safer than that. Obviously since this is MSE I want something that won't cost too much for what I'm getting.

I'm wondering about maybe a Toyota Corolla Verso. Can anyone tell me how the Verso compares with the Tino? I've also seen a Skoda Roomster listed online, but I've never heard of it. Can anyone tell me what they're like? What other makes/models should I consider?

Thanks in advance.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I will get slated for this, but all modern Renaults score 5 stars in NCAP tests.

A good buy would be a Scenic, or one of the new shape Lagunas.

My preferred hunting ground for cheap newish car is CarGiant, not CarCraft, but CarGiant.

    http://www.cargiant.co.uk/Renault/Scenic/details-501967-Renault-Scenic.asp?viewtype=0 2008/58 Scenic, 32k, serviced at 30k, £7799 + £91 fees.

My wifes Clio DCi has the same engine, and has given us no problems in the 18 months since purchase, the wife actually had an RTC just after buying it, luckily only minor side impact, but she was unhurt.

The car absorbed the impact well, and the Clio is also a 5 Star NCAP car.

A lot of people slag off Renaults, but the modern ones appear to be a lot better than some may think.

I have read lots of reports about the new Laguna, which appears to be a reliable, one poster on here had one from new till recently and found it reliable.

If the main consideration was safety then consider Renaults, for the money they make very tempting buys at 3 yrs old.

A diesel Citroen Picasso or Berlingo are good value for money. Ford do a Focus C Max. These are 5 seaters like your Tino.
Vauxhall do a Zafira and Toyota do a Corolla Verso but both have the extra seats in the back, the seats fold away though so you still have a five seater with good size boots.
Hyundai and Kia probably do equivalents too but I don't know much about these models.

If you go on Autotrader website, put in your postcode and the distance you are prepared to travel, put in your maximum you want to pay.
Then click on bodytype MPV and all the cars in your chosen area will be displayed.
If nothing else, it will give you an idea what can be bought for your budget.

Firstly, a lump of coal will be more interesting to drive than a tino.

However, I'd be looking at cars like the Scenic, CMax, Mazda 5 or the Honda Stream.

What is your budget? Are you looking for new or second hand?

To answer one of your questions, the Skoda Roomster is effectively the front end of a VW Polo with the back end of a VW Golf estate. It looks a bit odd but all the reviews of it I've seen suggest that it does the job well enough, providing you don't want any performance or street cred ;)

These days it seems Skodas tend to be better built and more reliable than the VWs they're based on!

I'm looking to buy something about 5 years old and spend no more than £8k absolute max.

Thanks for all the replies so far. :)

Indeed Emell, the Zafira is very safe, we have had over 100 written off in the London Amulance Service, including one in South London that is pictured on YouTube in a series of still photos.

But the reliability problems relating to the CDTi engine and the DPF mean I could never recommend a diesel one, plus the blind spot caused by the A Pillars is a serious safety issue, much worse in the mk2 than the mk1.

This is enough to rule one out for me, though the petrol ones are apparently much more reliable, but that blind spot rules it out, we had Health & Safety notice about the blind spot, but we have bought too many to get rid, they are also bright yellow!!!!!!! So can't really be sold easily.

Don't forget my other emporium of cheap MPv's, Addison Lee Car Sales, you will get an 08/08 Sharon with 98k on it, FSH, Black for £7200, but they will negotiate so perhaps you could get it for £7000 or less, remember, it is only three years old.

    Have a look on http://www.addleecarsales.com/

Though I think the old shape Sharon is a 3 Star NCAP car.

However it isn't all doom and gloom as Addison Lee started buying Ford Galaxy's in 2008, all auto with 2.0 TDCi engines, they will be starting to get sold off within the next three or four months, as they have a rigid three year age limit for their Private Hire fleet.

A three yr old Galaxy Auto for around £7k, oh, yes, I would have one. I would be happy with a Sharon if i'm honest, but the Galaxy is even better value.

I've got an 02 Tino that I'm trying to sell and nobody wants it. Only had it 5 months and only selling because I need a bigger estate. I'd never buy another.

Before that I had a Berlingo and wish I'd kept it. Wife has a Berlingo too and incredibly practical for kids, dogs and all the stuuf you cart about. Reliable, safe and cheap
