Undergroun cable

Hi
I've heard that cable TV companies operate horizontal drills to go under paths, wall, patios, gardens etc. Is it true, is there such a thing and if so can they be hired?
I need to get a power cable from under the house to my garage but need to cross a 4ft wide solid concrete path that I don't particularly want to break up.

There are many names for the technique that you are asking about. Some of them are Moling, no-dig trenchless technology, thrust boring and impact moling. It usually requires a hole each side of the pipe run. I don't know if you can hire the gear, but I would have thought that it might hardly be worthwhile for such a short run. Unless they happen to be working in your vicinity and you dug the access holes for them.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
you need someone like this
http://www.impactmoling.co.uk/
http://www.macmole.co.uk/
probably cheaper to dig it up0 -
They cost £100's to hireYou may click thanks if you found my advice useful0

If it is only 4ft wide, I would dig a hole either side and scoop a 2ft tunnel from both sides.
Depending on how firm the ground is, it should not take all that long to do.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
Thanks all.
Will probably angle grind and break a channel through the path and fill with sand, cement and gravel.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0 -
Could you try a pressure washer & see if it will push a hole through the soil???ANURADHA KOIRALA ??? go on throw it in google.0

You could always go overhead, wont look as good bu just another option. You would need an catenary wire to help support the cable.0

Probably the easiest.Thanks all.

You could consider getting a length of scaffold pole and cutting 2 or 3 teeth, say 25mm deep and splayed outwards. And at the other end a hole across the diameter to insert a bar. You could they probably drill the distance in an hour or 2, but you would need 2 pits, 1 long enough to accommodate the drill. hardest problem would probably be to get a start and you might need a short say 500mm version of the drill.
I have never seen or tried this. It is just how I think the problem can be approached.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
