You're right I expected to get the £38.65 (which is what halifax promised with the 6%) was owed, not the £31.60 I got which I'm sure you'll agree is not what was promised.

Right, so now that we have seen figures, we can see that it looks highly unlikely that there was any error in interest calculation, and all your posts can be summarised as:

"Halifax failed to register my daughter's account for gross interest, so she was taxed on the interest that she received. They have now registered the account, and I'll get the refund back soon."

Hardly a major problem, is it? They (appeared to have) made a mistake. They corrected it with no fuss.

But are you 100% sure that it was Halifax that you gave in the R85 form to, and not somewhere else? The fact that they do not use these forms (and instead just use a verbal declaration) makes your story fall apart slightly here.

Well, the way I see it is that banks will always mess up; they're huge organisations with hundreds or thousands of employees and therefore huge scope for human error, plus the massive computer systems that might sometimes have a flaw that affects us.

It's our job as consumers to be informed and vigilant so we can spot these errors when they occur, and tell the banks. If we're in the right, they will normally correct the error. Sometimes you have to jump through a few hoops or kick up a stink, but we get there in the end.

I certainly don't think its my job to chase up the banks for not doing their job.

I don't see why you needed the figures to figure that out, you simply have to read the first two posts where I stated such.

They did make a mistake and I had to ring up argue it until they corrected it. Thats why I was further compensated, because of the wasted time at the start and end of the term. The tax should never have been charged because I had already told them, when I opened the account, she doesn't pay tax.

On the one hand you claim the banks are capable of making mistakes with tax (stating this is a minor problem) and yet refuse to believe I was told by this same bank to fill out a R85 (I would imagine less of a mistake than the tax) and take it and the birth cert into a branch. Seriously bud make up your mind.

I'll tell you what you dont have to believe what I'm saying, thats up to you. But the fact is I was told to fill out one of those forms, they did mess up the interest by charging tax on the account despite being verbally told my daughter isn't eligible for tax.

As an aside note whilst on the phone I was offered a credit card, they stated I was eligible for a £10,000 limit being a valued customer. They were shocked to find out they'd rejected me last year (4 months ago) for the same credit card. I bet you don't believe me about that either so search under my user name and find the thread I started because I thought there was something wrong with my credit report.
