Need a new contract for my wife

I have bought a new Android phone for my wife. At the moment she's on a very old Orange Value Promise Virgin tariff taken out I believe in the last century
.
I switched to O2 from Orange to take advantage of cheaper broadband saving me £15 per month. I found out also that most of my contacts are O2 customers and my mobile bill dropped from £30-£40 per month to around £15 per month. When I switched however my wife's monthly bill increased from about £7 to around £12-£13 but the Orange pricematched Virgin tariff was worth keeping I thought.
Anyway problem is now gonna be with this new phone... The Virgin tariff that Orange price matched was long before any data charges were implemented so I can envisage Orange charging me outragious data charges the moment I insert my wife's SIM card into the new phone.
Ideally I would like my wife;s contract to stay OVP Virgin for calls but with some sort of data allowance.
I guess this won't happen so second choice would be a new contract for my wife with whoever with her present number but transfer the Virgin tariff to a new number to keep. (I find it useful to have access to the Orange network were O2 coverage is poor without a fully fledged contract on Orange)
Anyone have any ideas if either of my preferences are possible???

Very hard to follow what with Orange/Virgin etc being mentioned in same breath.
I don't understand getting a new phone to use an old tariff (you could have got a new contract then). And if O2 are poor in your area, then why get O2 (ok maybe for the broadband).
Data costs per month are likely to be about £5 - £7.50 I imagine (check the Orange web site) for an addon or just ask Orange about it.
Or just go for a simple life and get a new cheap Orange contract with data bundle. Ask Orange about it. Or check which networks work in your area with some free pay and go sim cards first before going further.0 -

Orange many years ago used to match other operators tariffs if you wanted. Virgin had a tariff with no fixed monthly payment... all you paid each month were calls used at the standard rate of 15p per min for the first 5 mins each each day and then 5p per min for anything else. Suits my wife's light usage patterns. Its like having a PAYG where you pay at the end of the month.I don't understand getting a new phone to use an old tariff (you could have got a new contract then).
I'm on O2 simplicity rolling monthly contract and my wife is obviously out of contract on her tariff and we don't particularly want to sign up for a new 12/18/24 month contract.
We don't buy phone contracts to obtain handsets both me and my wife upgrade our phones occasionally by buying a new PAYG handset. The tariff she's on suits her call usage which is why I would like to keep it but the data charges on that plan is £3 per MB which would mean big charges for even a small amount of data.
We've sort of resigned ourselves that we probably will be switching to some data inclusive PAYG/rolling contract for her new phone but I think I'll keep the Virgin Tariff active since its not gonna cost much.
I just thought I'd ask here if anyone had any ideas how I could add reasonable data charges to her contract before approaching Orange because, forever the cynic, I am aware Orange may not always outline all the options possible when I call.0 -
I had the same OVP as your wife. I was also reluctant to let it go, so now use it in my business phone and have switched to Tesco for personal phone. If I didn't have the Tesco plan then I would use Giff Gaff.0
