Mondeo advice please folks

Hi all,

My car a 2003 1.8 Mondeo needs some work doing to it. At the last MOT advisories were
  • rear CV gaiter deteriorated.
  • Brake pipe corroded
  • Brake discs corroded (due to standing while other car was used)
  • Engine light on (and sometimes off) which came back to an EGR issue when tested by RAC
Just wondering what to do about it. It only has £53000 miles and other components - clutch, tyres etc seem fine. When I had the front coil spring done the garage said there was an oil leak somewhere but it was misting and there is no oil beneath the car at any point. The car isn't particualrly using more oil than you'd expect from a car of that age.

Just not sure what to do. Should I get the above items fixed and keep it or sell it for scrap? Is it worth keeping or will it just become a money pit from now on?

Been offered £250 by an online company for scrap or £300 by an aquaintance.

Would appreciate any thoughts as to cost of sorting out above items and what you would do if it was your car.

Need to decide quickly as insurance is due next Tuesday and I don't want to fork out for a year's insurance only to get rid of it a few weeks later.

Many thanks,
Padz

  • if you scrap a car just becouse of a few small problems, you really have more money than sense

it would cost £100 max to get it all fixed, and less if you do the work yourself

the parts you have mentioned are all wear and tear items
  • Get it repaired and keep using it! Can't even believe you're asking about scrapping it for a few hundred quid! :)

I would fix it there all easy jobs and i have seen more advisories on car's less than 4 years old !!The only thing that is not a straightforward job that all cars will need is the engine light although if it is passing it's emission test i don't think it would be a fail (hence the advisory)

Sounds like a good car :)

Thanks for the input guys. I'm female though so I don't do the fixing cars myself thing. Would most likely be the dealer who fixes it. Going to get a quote anyway and take it from there.

Thanks for your thoughts - I appreciate it.

No need for a dealer, find a decent independent mechanic [Y]

Rear CV? This is a front wheel drive vehicle.. Are you sure it didn't say inner CV gaiter? Either way, a CV gaiter should cost about £60-£80 to replace.
    * Brake pipe corroded
Brake pipework corroded to a single wheel? £80 to remedy. Two wheels £150. All four wheels £250
    * Brake discs corroded (due to standing while other car was used)
Sounds a bit doubtful. Take them off and give them a rub down. If they really are irreparably corroded, replacement discs are £10-£15 per wheel for that car.
    * Engine light on (and sometimes off) which came back to an EGR issue when tested by RAC
Replace or clean the valve. If a replacement is needed, expect to pay £15-£25 for a second hand one and £20 for its fitting.

Do you like the car? Do you want to keep it? Every car is a money pit. It's low mileage for the year. What price would it attain in a private sale to someone other than your tight-arsed acquaintance? Check out autotrader where high mileage (100k+) examples of the 1.8 zetec mondeo are priced at over £1000.

I would get it through the MOT on a budget.

DIY or use a cheap independent mechanic for the work and then decide.
  • take your advisory to an indepenadant garange and ask how much for these to be done! i'd say about 150-250 max.

Thanks again for your thoughts. I will get it checked out first and then decide. Thanks to all for putting the problems into perspective for me. Much appreciated.

A useful forum for everything ford is https://www.talkford.com and they have a very good mondeo section. I have a 2001 mk3 as well which i have just done the pads and disks all round for 115 using mintex parts from ebay. However full service and mot cost 180 with another 150 to replace a caliper and two handbrake cables. Mines done 100k though.
