Massive Dilema!

I am moving into my new house on Thursday (First Time Buyer) and, although im going with Virgin for Broadband and Phone purely for speed, I am undecided about the TV!

I am currently living with my parents, and have sky here so am used to it, but am moving to a cable area and just assumed as i was gettin Broadband with Virgin, it would work out cheaper to get the TV with them too.

However Iv worked out that their isnt too much difference when looking at the TV.

Based on me getting cashback from quidco or topcashback, for 12 months it would cost me for TV:

Sky

12 Month Charge £393.00
Setup 0
TOTAL CHARGE £393.00

Credits (M&S Voucher) £100
Cashback £85

Total for 12 months £208.00

Virgin

12 Month Charge £294
Setup £49.95
TOTAL CHARGE £343.95

Credits (off first Bill) £50
Cashback £105

Total for 12 months £188.95

Both based on similar packages, XL HD for virgin, and Sky HD with a couple of the packs that we would use - doesnt include movies or sport. Not much difference between the 2! Another Pro with Virgin is ESPN comes free, which is a bonus and would get used.

However another pro for sky is that I am going to get the cashback from virgin anyway because im getting Broadband with them, so I could get 2 lots of cashback!

Iv been undecided for 2 weeks! Never used virgin before, but like the idea of the indemand content. However, with sky, I know what to expect which is great.

Is their any chance you can haggle for a new customer? If I go to a virgin shop tomorow, would they be able to offer me a "special deal"? Or does this simply not happen for new customers?

I have had both, and would not go back to Sky unless forced!!!!

Virgin has on demand content that Sky does not, Virgin does not go off when it snows or the weather is bad!!!! You dont own the virgin box, you only rent it as such, which means if it goes wrong they come out and fix/replace it!! The V+ box can record 2 programs whilst you watch a third, with sky you can record one and watch one.

Also, if you wait a couple of days you will be able to get the Virgin Tivo box which is supposed to be the bees knees!! (i'll let you know about that as mine is getting installed next week!!), also, a 2nd box for another room is cheaper with Virgin!!!

Obviously the above is just my opinion, but I have been with Virgin now for 3 years and whilst there have been probs, i have not had any more then I did with Sky when I was with them!!

Yep, and its £150 for existing!!! Bit then it does have a 1TB hard disk in it!!! They are also bringing out a 500GB version of it which will be cheaper, I think that was only £50 for existing customers so will no doubt be cheaper for new as well!!!

500gb is launced 16th May and is indeed £49.99 for "box activation" but also plus £40 "installation" plus £3 per month.

Whilst the 1tb is £149 "box activation" with no "installation" fee,

    offer code VX0411

Why these firms need such convoluted charging structures I have no idea.

I've recently been forced to leave virgin - no fibre optic cables in my new street - after 7ish years.

For TV I found their V+ box to be glitchy:

On several occasions it failed to record; deleted recordings or showed erratic statistics with regards to the amount of recording space I had left.

    It also froze quite frequently.

I found their customer service appalling too.

Having said that, when the service was working, it was off the hook and the Tivo box will blow the sky box out of the water.

    If I didn't have to get sky, I wouldn't.
I used to work for them and their customer service seems better, but in almost every other department, VM wins.

The £50 installation charge is a joke, even more so if you previously had another vm box as the engineer comes out and simply connects the box.

AS for deals, as we've just missed the friends and family offer, their are very few deals to be had from sky.
