so in comes chappy pays the balance my mate says bring your car round and we will hitch you up and Bobs your uncle,

bloke brings his car into the yard and NO TOW BAR:eek:,my mate points out the problem and the bloke then says he thought that they would fit the tow bar as they sold him the van:rotfl::rotfl:

when they explained NOOOO you get your towbar sorted the idiot then demands his money back under SOGA as the CARAVAN isnt 'fit for purpose':rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

he was told to go away and get a towbar fitted and come back, but no the bloke is going to take them to court:rotfl::rotfl:

The case will last about 2 minutes, and include much hilarity.

But perhaps a goodwill gesture might be a nicer result all round - maybe offering half the towhook cost, or getting one from a scrapyard (I'm sure your pal has contacts and can get a scrapper towbar for a fiver) and giving it to the bloke to fit himself?

I am sure some more experienced caravanners will be along shortly to tell you that it isnt as simple as getting a towbar from a scrappies and fitting it!

I think the last towbar fitting I knew about cost around £500!

So your response to someone turning up to collect their caravan and expecting their car to be fitted with a free towbar there and then, and subsequently cancelling the sale and threatening court action when you tell them no is to put your hand in your pocket and stump up half the cost for a new towbar? Really!?

That's almost as daft as the original problem! :rotfl:

My dad did at least two fittings of tow-bars in the 70s and 80s. (Basically, he had two triumph 2000 series followed by two Vauxhalls with an identical chassis to each other and transferred the tow bars.) The electrics aren't that difficult if you're reasonably intelligent, but it is a fiddly and time consuming job.

The point of all that is that I think the parts are specialised to each "Platform", but would be only a fraction of the £500 job.

You obviously have not priced up a modern tow bar or the CANBUS electrical interfaces which most cars require nowadays, or the costed for the on-board electronics adjustments required to be done by authorised dealers (Tech 2 in the case of Vauxhall and Opel).

No, what I was suggesting was if by being in the trade, the pal was able to find a used towbar as a gesture of goodwill to get the sale, it may be worth it. I don't know what caravans cost, I don't know what towbars cost, I don't know what fitting costs, but if it is a hurdle that can be overcome for £20 to sell a £2000 caravan, maybe it is worth it. If it costs £500 to sell a £500 caravan, it clearly isn't. Really so daft? Not having any figures on costs and GP I'm just kicking around some ideas...
  • Good, that will be one less caravan on the road this weekend

Oh, and I hope he charges for parking his propert at the showroom as well.

If it costs £500 to sell a £500 caravan then I would question the profitability of the business to be honest... :rotfl:
