So how did he/she propose?

Ah these have all made me tearful, as has rethinking our proposal!
We had moved in together mid 2010. OH and I had been away for my birthday weekend (early December) and I was convinced he was going to do it then. He didn't as he said he didn't want to be predictable so I thought ok, new year as we were going away. We had talked about marriage a lot but I knew he wasn't so keen so thought even new year was pushing it!
We had a lovely sunday of our weekend away, went to a lovely restaurant and had a nice slow relaxed journey home. We stopped by my parents as we were looking after their dog the next day (my birthday) then got home, when I did all the unpacking etc as usual.
I sat in front of the tv and he kept getting up, sitting down, getting up, sitting down again and it was doing my head in! The dog was getting restless with him so on his (what felt like) 100th trip up the stairs, I shouted him to bring my trainers down to take the dog out. He came downstairs and kneeled beside me at the sofa to which I grumpily said I can put my own trainers on idiot. He then pulled out the ring box from behind his back and said "will you marry me" at which point I burst into tears and started jumping around the house!

Alot of people dont understand, saying that they would hate to be proposed to like that but I love it!!
The ring was my great grandmas which we had resized a few months earlier as I always maintained I wanted that ring for my engagement ring but I was still surprised!
OMG this one just made me all tearythis is so cute and i love it... you are a lucky girl
.....
i have just finished reading them all such wonderful engagment storys you are all very lucky ladies x0 -
I love it that some of you got engaged after being together for only a short time and are still happily married! My mum and dad got engaged after 6 weeks of 'courting', married after 6 months of being engaged, and have been married 41 years!
My OH asked me to marry him after 4 hoursHonestly
We 'met' on a Monday in the pub - although we were on 'nodding' terms beforehand we'd never really spoken. We sat chatting and found out we lived two streets apart - shared a taxi home - He invited me in for 'a drink'and at about 2am he said 'If I ever got married again you're exactly the person I'd want to marry'
Being a bit tipsy I laughed and said 'OK then' and he rushed off and woke his lodger up and dragged her back to me - got on one knee and said 'Will you marry me' - I laughed again and said 'yeah go on then'. At this point I thought it was still all a joke - and fell asleep - he woke me up when he was going to work, walked me home and arranged to meet me during my dinner break at work that evening.
He turned up with a key and a temporary ring - and I never went back to my own flat ever again
Within 2 weeks we'd met each others families and I got a permanant ring.
We've been together 7 years and married for 5
ETA: After the initial giddy excitement died down OH was a bit worried about telling his parents in case they were a bit funny about it (he has a DD from a previous marriage and they are fairly protective of her) so we waited a couple of months and then he 're-proposed' at his parents house and they were very happy.
My parents on the otherhand knew from day one (almost) as they couldn't really complain as they went from strangers to married within six months - uprooting my brother and I from schools and moving miles to be together - all I had to do was move my telly :rotfl:

Wonderful story
We included OH's DD in our ceremony - I read a poem to her (well - cried it at her) and we gave her a ring - she even signed the register

I think this is the first post that has ever made me cry! Reading these stories has been so touching.
My wonderful OH always said that he would never marry again and I was OK with this.
Then in summer 2009 there was a meteor shower and we took a blanket down to the park and lay in the middle of the football pitch looking up. We were there for around 30mins before it started clouding up and we decided to leave. He sat up first and then I saw a shooting star, but he missed it. At the time I couldn't understand why he was so dissapointed. (doh)
Later we arranged to go out on the following Saturday. He told me to have some lunch, dress casual and he'd meet me at home. I love suprises and he is sooo good at them.
Saturday came and before arriving I was sent a text with a cryptic clue on it - the solution being a statue in our local park where we walked to after lunch. Next thing I'm searching around the statue for the next clue. I'm a Geocacher and absolutely love treasure hunts - I used to set them up in school and Wincy Willis was my superhero. 15 clues later and I have my very own anagram to work out. (I was never good at anagrams so it's just as well it was starting to click what was going on) Ironically as I was rummaging around for clues a bride and groom turned up to have their photos taken in the gardens.
As we sat in a beautiful Japanese garden "Would you marry me?" emerged.
As did a bottle of champagne, two glasses and a box of strawberries.
We went off for a meal and kept it completely secret for a week whilst we talked about marriage - we'd never had any conversations on the subject because it was always something we would never do!
Turns out he was waiting for us to see a shooting star together in the park and was gutted to have missed out. In the end it was the perfect proposal for me and he put so much effort into setting it all up.
Married last May and had our photos taken where he proposed. Sooo happy.

My proposal was neither romantic nor particularly special - it was on the first night of our first big holiday together in Italy as we were unpacking our suitcases.
What makes me smile and (still) get a bit teary is when I think of when I first started seeing OH. We had previously gone out and had an on-off relationship in our late teens and suffice to say that I was more smitten than he was. At the end of 6th form, I realised he just wasn't interested and we went our separate ways. Fast forward seven years or so and I had just come out of a long, bad relationship. We meet up again. As friends. Except I still *really* like him. I have too much to drink and tell him this. OH tells me that he does like me, but he doesn't want to be a rebound. If we're going to go out, he intends to marry me one day.
Talk about being upfront with someone!
(I reminded him that he'd actually proposed to me when he was very drunk when I was 17... Anyone want to hear that one? LOL)Don't worry about typing out my username - Call me COMP(Unless you know my real name - in which case, feel free to use that just to confuse people!)0 -

An ex-boyfriend once asked me to marry him as he was throwing up after a birthday night out. My response? 'Well, you won't remember this tomorrow morning and you've not chewed your chips'0 -
I have cried A LOT!! Esp Rainbow Drops and Banbury Bride - lovely stories xxx
My (now DH!) proposed to me in a Michelin stared restaurant - quietly and privately (whilst telling me not to make too much of a fuss!) It was very lovely and very us... I especially like the fact that after all the excitment was over we came home and watched Britains Got Talent that he'd unexpectedly recorded for me!
The proposal finally came after some sweet conversations, one being him asking me "How do you know if you propose that the woman will say yes?", and many many friends asking us after various holidays (Rome, Jamacia, a night in Barcelona) whether I had "any news"??? This was so lovely as I was truely genuinely surprised, and to be honest, by the time he got round to it, I didn't think it would be possible for him to surprise meDFW Nerd #1310 -
My OH proposed on the evening of February 13th 2010. We went for dinner to the local swanky restaurant and then we went up onto the Heath and let off Chinese lanterns. This was supposed to be our "non valentines" dinner as we dont buy in for all the one day a year to announce your love stuff, and we hate going out on the one day of the year the restaurants are filled with soppy couples! So, the meal was lovely, they forgot to charge us our drinks so we paid and left quite quickly.
On the heath we began trying to set off our lanterns, We set fire to the first one and had to stamp it out on the ground efore we caused too much damage, we soon got the hang of it and the 2nd one went soaring up into the sky. The sky was clear and the number of stars you could see was amazing. So as we watched the 3rd lantern fly off into the sky he had his arms around me and asked “will you marry me?”. Apparently there was a long silence as I was so stunned, I eventually found the power of speech and replied with “Are you serious”, When he said yes he was serious I continued with “No I mean are you really serious?”. After a little more babbling on my part making him promise he would keep me safe and telling him I only ever wanted to do it once I gave him a huge hug and said “Yes!”. Once I had stopped crying (he didn’t understand why I was crying!!) we let off another lantern, which was when we heard a distant child shout to his dad that he could see a bright orange light in the sky! Amused by the fact we had convinced a child that Aliens were on their way we gathered our things and went home. We spent the rest of the evening smiling and looking a little bit shell shocked by what had just happened. We went home and watched cool runnings on telly! We didn't ring anyone or say anything until the next day as we wanted a little time where it was jsut special between us!
Having woken up at 3:00am on the Sunday morning I was finally able to get himout of bed at 8am. We decided to go to Leicester to chose an engagement ring together and see my Mum and Dad. The whole journey was filled with wedding talk, and during this time we decided that we would like the ceremony to be in a church. 1st decision made - Woohoo! Having arrived in Leicester City Centre for 11am, we began looking in Jewellers for the special ring. Despite the fact I didn’t know what I wanted the ring to be like; we found ‘the one’ quite quickly. By 1pm we were walking back to the car.
So next stop was Mum and Dad’s, we let ourselves in and when asked what we were doing there (we live 100 miles away) I said “Just thought we’d come and let you know that we’re engaged”. This news was immediately followed by hugs and lots of excited talk about where, when and how this had come about. Seems they are very pleased for us!! OH had asked Dad for their blessing in advance so they weren’t overly surprised but he had refused to disclose any information as to where or when. I think the suspense had been killing them! We made a few phone calls during the afternoon to inform the rest of the family, there seemed to be a lot of squealing from the OH's Mum and Sister but all in all the news was very well received!
A week later our local paper had an article about how there had been UFO sightings over the town on saturday night. We did write to the newspaper and tell them it was just us and our lanterns but they didnt believe us!!
I marry OH in 3 weeks and I cannot wait to be his wife!0 -
My boyfriend proposed in Dubai. We'd had a heavy few days watching the Rugby 7s last December and decided to stay out for a few days after as my birthday was the day after it finished. We'd talked about getting engaged and he'd even asked me about ring designs so it was no huge surprise, though I didn't know exactly when it would be.
On my birthday we went to the most AMAZING resturant, called Pier Chic, about 100 metres out into the sea with goregous views. It was an Islamic day so no booze was being sold. He seemed pretty petrified all night so I quickly realised what he was going to do, plus texts asking for regular updates throughout the evening from my mum didn't help! So he popped the question after pudding and we went back to our hotel room to drink the Champagne I'd luckily bought at the airport! (among other things, of course!)0
