So how did he/she propose?

Options
Following on from Sugar_Pies thread I just wondered how many of us had 'real life' proposals compared to 'wedding magazine' proposals?

I wasn't proposed to. :) In 2005, after a really tough year at work where I should have called my union in, I decided MrD was such a rock and I wanted to become his wife. Until that point neither of us ever ever ever wanted to get married. (We'd been together for 6 years then, and living together for 2). Over the next 5 years we had lots of 'discussions' that usually ended up with me crying lol cause he just didn't see the point (and until that crap year of work I'd have agreed with him!). In Feb half term 2010, he said 'alright then'. And I was the happiest girlie in the whole wide world!

There was no getting down on one knee. There was no big huge public display of affection.

Am I disappointed? Hell no! To me marriage is all about discussions and compromising, why should the 'proposal' be any different? Why does it 'have' to be all down to one partner deciding now is the right time? Lol I'll end this now before it turns into a right rant.

(Oh and Sugar_Pie - there is a rather large part of me that is enjoying sticking two fingers up at the wedding industry and is proud of doing it 'on the cheap' x).

  • we got engaged under a big leafy tree in a big beautiful park near where we live,
we had just picked up the ring and went there specifically to do it so it wasnt very romantic surprise wise but we were both happy with it...

he made it special with a couple of things he said and thats what mattered to us
  • H2B took me on a picnic in an orchard, in the spring. It was lovely (albeit slightly chilly lol), and it was a surprise! We'd had general discussions about marriage, and he'd said stuff like 'if I get married....' near the beginning of our relationship so I knew that marriage was something he wanted for the future. Took nearly four years before he popped the question though!

Ours wasn't soppy - this is from our wedding page...
I knew he had the ring on order, my birthday passes so i assumed it would be xmas and he was too excited to wait that long.

    The proposal...

After much hunting and help from Js parents N found the perfect ring to propose. On a cosy Friday evening N prepared J a beautiful meal (deal number 3). Unbeknownst to J, N had hidden the ring in the microwave and waited for the perfect moment to be on one knee.

N awaited J's depature from the living room and raced to the computer to play their song (you will find out on the big day). J unfortunately decided now would be a good time to clean the bathroom sink... As the song began blasting through the house N began to wonder where J was and shuffled along the floor to find her.

N eventually found J cleaning the sink, and when she turned around he was there with ring in hand and a big cheesy grin... You can guess what she said :-)

We had been out for the day shopping and to an art gallery and then we went thought we could go for tea at our favourite restraunt to top off a nice day and then at the end of the meal he just started saying all these things about us and then pulled out a ring box and before he even said it I started laughing and then when he asked if I would marry him I was in hysterics because I thought he was kidding... lol

He really did look gutted when I started laughing I think he thought I was going to say no and that he was being stupid but I didn't!

I knew he was up to something, and I knew he was planning to propose. We'd been talking about marriage since early in our relationship, and we'd just bought our first house together. A couple of things he'd said made me think he was out looking for rings - and one day when we were out shopping, I jokingly said "ooh lets look at engagement rings" and instead of going "aaargh" he said, "ok then" and led me to the jewellers. We had a giggly look in the window until a sales assistant came and scared us off and we continued with the shopping.

We were coming up to an anniversary, and going up to the Highlands on holiday so I figured he'd propose on one or the other.

So, one day I went into work to do the late shift only to find out that I was supposed to be on holiday, so I turned around and came home again. H2B wasn't there which was quite unusual. As he was due to come and pick me upI sent him a text and he arrived home quite quickly looking panicked. I asked where he'd been and he said "ooh just driving around". I then asked where he'd gone and he just said "oh just driving around {insert dodgy area here}".

A couple of days later he asked if I'd come home from work early to look after him as he was feeling poorly, so I came home at lunchtime. He was sitting under a duvet in the messy sitting room looking really pale so I presumed this wasn't it. Then he said he had written a poem for me, and wanted to read it. He attempted to put on our song but got the wrong CD and played Wonderwall at me, before he changed it, then he read the poem. I jokingly pretended to throw up and he took a huff. Then after the poem he went over to his laptop bag and brought out a ring box. He got down on one knee and proposed and then put the ring on my finger.

It wasn't until about an hour later I realised I hadn't actually said yes.

I've still not been forgiven for pretending to throw up while he was proposing.

With a gummy Haribo Ring, drinking Stella, watching Die Hard 2. Unplanned (by him) obviously and I may have had a little more to do with it. Ok, I bought the Haribo, made sure a ring was left to the end, pointed at it and said 'that'll do for me if it'll do for you'. He was a perfect gentleman though and although being extremely nervous he did do the asking.

Not everyones idea of romance but was perfect for us :)
  • My daughter and I both have had unusual proposals!

I have been married for 32 years this year, and in early 1979 we were looking for a new flat. We found a perfect one to rent but we couldn't quite afford the rent for it. The estate agent informed us that if we got married we would be able to claim 'married man's tax relief' (sadly, long gone!). He did the figures for us and we worked out we could afford it if we were married! My partner said, might as well do that then, and 3 months later we were married and moved in to our new home! Everyone said either that it would last (still might not, but 32 years isn't bad), or that I must be pregnant - sure enough, 7 years later our daughter was born!

Catherine and David had discussed marriage and even picked a date etc, but hadn't bought a ring. David said he wanted to make the official proposal really memorable. Money is tight for them at the moment and they couldn't afford a romantic weekend away, so he got the ring, woke her at 3am in the morning with flowers and proposed then. Very memorable - but not quite what she was hoping for!

I had no clue that OH was planning to propose - he'd even managed to nick one of my rings to help size the engagement ring without me noticing.

We were travelling around Australia, and about mid-way through the trip we went on a diving boat trip around the Whitsunday Islands, just off the Great Barrier Reef.
Then, on Whitehaven Beach, which is just breathtaking:

he got down on one knee & proposed!
We even have a photo of the moment because the tour guide was snapping away at the moment. Here's the pic - will only leave it up a short while.

Everyone thought it was staged, but believe me, I would have taken off that stupid hat for a staged pic!

PS - Can you guess why my nickname is Rainbow Drops? ;)

I was sunning myself in the garden and he wrote "will you marry" and then an arrow in little bits of bark above my head. He asked me to turn around and he was down on one knee next to the arrow with the ring in his hand. Lovely.
saving up another deposit as we've lost all our equity.

    Love the pic Rainbow drops!

I don't think we had a proposal as such, although DF first started hinting at a music festival when we'd been together about 6 months. It's a folky/crusty festival with lots of tents selling "vintage" (i.e. old and skanky) clothing. One of them had loads of wedding dresses hanging outside and he suggested we should buy one :rotfl:Nice try. We just decided to get married, somewhere along the way, and then went ring shopping together.

Mine had to be resized, so DF went and collected it a week or so later, and came to meet me off a train. He put my ring on my finger at the end of platform 1 at Kings Cross station - not kneeling (filthy!) and all huddled together so no one would see what we were doing. I will never feel the same about the station ever again!

(He got his on his finger on Xmas Eve, in our car outside my office).
