I agree with a lot of what you say...after all, its how I have to live. But it just shows how dangerous it can be that I just checked dhs no salt/sugar muesli and its 220 cals a portion. I KNOW he doesn't weigh it and my guestimate is that his portion about 500 cals..but thats a guess. Its that type of guestimate I'm saying is supported in posts where we say ''about x calories'' while saying people should more closely monitor in/out put! Its funny, suely its not just I who can see that? :)

I think, as long as you can be within about 100cals guestimate (in general for most people) for each meal. People should do fairly well at maintaining a weight or gaining or losing should they desire. (EG if you knew 2000 cals was you maintain point you would aim for 1500 to lose weight and 2500 to gain weight)

It is usualy snacks which are the killers for most, the little treats that forget to get added that could equal an extra meal a day. (400-500 cals)

TBF I am a big bowler rather than a 3 bowler. In general I think every man would be dead if we ate recomended cereal bowl sizes of food. :)

Also it as I said before a food where it will not be 100% intaken. the fiber, nuts etc will mainly not be fully broken down before leaving. (put in a nice way)
I always though that some calorific values are wrong but saying that the guides should be used.
Roughage, alcohol, nuts are all examples where their burnt value will be higher than the calories retained by the body.

    Definitely agree with this.

Also pleased to have some potential saving in my allowances for glasses of wine. :);)

I didn't count calories at all through the entire period of my weight loss. I just changed to a routine of 3 meals a day, starting with a full English breakfast - bacon, egg, sausages - and followed with two protein-based meals later in the day. Sometimes I would forget to eat the second or third meals because I just wasn't hungry. Afterwards, for interest I counted up the typical daily calorie total and I was averaging less than 2000.

I still have the breakfast every day.

one thing i really think needs to change is the guidelines for recommended calorie intake. 2000 for a woman and 2500 for a man is just plain wrong in many cases particularly with modern sedentary lifestyles. much more accurate is to use a bmr calculator to work out how many calories you need to maintain your current weight according to height and age and then know that if you do more activity or cut down food intake you will lose and if you do the opposite you will gain.

    http://www.bmrcalculator.org/

if i ate 2000 cals a day i'd be obese unless i was doing really serious training (rather than moderately active 4-5 visits to the gym a week).

i'm 5'2" and my current calorie requirements are about 1700 i'd say so if i ate 2000 i'd be getting an extra 1500 a week (almost an extra days worth of food a week). if the government can't even give out decent guidelines how are people supposed to used calorie control for weight maintenance.

Perhaps this thread - more than the others you have posted on this thread - explain why you are obese?

Maybe. It doesn't really explain why I could go out and drink 3 or 4 pints a night in my 20s and still stay slim though!

Absolutely. My mother remembers five-six hefty ''meals'' a day...starting with steak and eggs breakfasts, but her family worked physically hard all day. Today, particularly where people don't even need to walk to a bus stop station in the morning, our low activity lifestyles are lower activity and our moderate ones probably would have been considered low in the past.

FWIW: you get the same when people choose for their pets/animals too. A peer of mine who went to work in the field of nutrition spends vast amounts of time convincing people their horses are in light work not medium-hard work...and thuse don't need the rations of a Grand National runner and the chances are their dog needs more than a two mile walk a day to need ove the recommended ration of food!
