It's tailed off a bit now he's in his early 30s, but he still eats a lot more than most people. He's 6 ft 1, 42 inch chest, 30 inch waist, and slim and athletic rather than chunky.

I just asked him what he's eaten today:

3 bowls of no-sugar museli with soya milk, raisins and a chopped banana

2 mugs of chicken, leek and potato soup, 3 wholemeal bread rolls, a large pot of yogurt

slice of lemon cake and an apple (afternoon tea)

now - he's just had dinner, which I cooked - a large pile of wholemeal rice, spiced chickpeas, peas, and a tomato and cucumber salad, a large glass of orange juice, and then a magnum chocolate lolly. He'll probably have a bowl of mixed nuts and raisins later, he often does.

No idea how many calories, but a lot of grub, I think.

Most probably about 2500 cals off the top of my head. But healthy cals. that is where some cals dont work out, eg nuts we burn them to estimate calorific content, but if you don't digest them fully (like most people don't) you wont see the full cals.

I was 5'10 (and still am) but at hight of training 46 chest 32 waist (I wont say the arm size but it would be leg size for some:o) and to keep that was around 3500.
I would drink lots of milk, eat lots of chicken pasta (about a small chicken a day) and Veg. Fruit for snacks.

But sounds about the right intake for his height if reasonable active. (reading on I see he is)

stopping people expressing their views isn't going to stop them holding them. so better out then in don't you think?

there's often more value in a wrong view being expressed - so that it can be judged and responded to in the cold light of day - than a right one imho.

Has anybody said anything that is blatantly untrue?

Impossible to say like that. I have to keep really detailed food diaries more often than I don't...and the ''soup'' and ''some raisins'' is just an impossible supposition. The ''Piece'' of cake could be anything between say 300 ish calories and 6-700 cals. That difference regularly are the missing cls people don't realise they under or over eat.

One of the reasons I eat fairly monotonously through the week is because it saves calculations and looking things up, so that I only have to think about this when eating elsewhere. Of course you have to make guesstimates at times, but its a foolhardy path to go don from such description! (and the one that lets people kid themselves!)

yes but that shouldn't stop them being allowed to say it. plenty of blatant untruths are touted around in public all the time.

Just estimated average sizes around 3X 200 cals for breakfast.
150 Cals X 2 for the soup and 200 cals X 3 for the bread rolls
    400 cals cake

500-600 Dinner 100 cals OJ and 250 cals magnum.

That would by estimates, so between 2500-3000 cals.
I was not saying I was accurate as without knowing exactly the protions for everything and working them out in a lab it would be impossible to be spot on
Portion size is everything but you can estimate intake if you know a bit about what things approx values are.
If more people knew aproximate values of what they eat it would go a lot to solving obesity. A burger king or a whole pizza can be more than half of your daily intake of cals and more than a whole days fat.
People would get in trouble if they estimated the above as 1500 or 5000. With his height and build I cant see it being more than 3000 cals based on what NDG has said about his build/weigh otherwise he would have to get bigger to maintain a higher intake.

Many people in the UK have no idea about the cals in food or they type of cals they intake

I agree with a lot of what you say...after all, its how I have to live. But it just shows how dangerous it can be that I just checked dhs no salt/sugar muesli and its 220 cals a portion. I KNOW he doesn't weigh it and my guestimate is that his portion about 500 cals..but thats a guess. Its that type of guestimate I'm saying is supported in posts where we say ''about x calories'' while saying people should more closely monitor in/out put! Its funny, suely its not just I who can see that? :)
