So Barclays don't want to know and can only suggest that DD gets in touch with Experian as they are they ONLY ones who can alter the credit record. DD rings Experian and they say the only way a record can be altered is if the company concerned write to Experian stating they want DD's name taken of that account. NOW we have already been into the NAtionwide Branch where we opened this account and they categorically said there was NOTHING they could do because we had closed the account!! HELP - I really feel tied in knots by these people - pillar to post is the phrase that comes to mind!
When DD did the Statement of Disassociation - who did this go to? I thought it would have paved the way for the removal of her name from this account, am I just being naive or plain stupid?

  • I think sorting out the credit file issue won't help in the short-term, has your daughter spoken to anyone at her university yet about this?

Could she ask Experian and Equifax to put a Notice of Correction on her file? She could then put her own explanation on her credit file which might help if she were to apply for another student account.

Have you tried opening a student account else where? Try Natwest or RBS.

Its worth a try, I opened one with Natwest on a horrendous credit rating (not saying this is a good thing but it is possible)

If she resorted to Dr Brooke Magnanti's method of student funding, might not a business account be more appropriate? :p

How much is she overdrawn at present? I see from Barclays advertising of their student loans that they were awarded the best student account provider for 2011 with free overdrafts up to £2,000. It may be an idea to contact their Head Office and make a complaint along the lines of how unhelpful they are being to a top science student at one of Britain's top universities. If they mention her bad credit score you could make the point that she is a poor student at present and is in financial difficulty but when she obtains her degree she will be a high earner and if Barclays do not help her now in her hour of need then they will lose her custom forever. You could emphasise that this country needs scientists.

You could also mention that you are going to contact Watchdog and the Daily Mail about the case and their unsympathetic attitude towards a hard working student who through no fault of her own will have to drop out of uni due to financial difficulty. You could mention that you will query how they got this top award and do they deserve it?

Alsohas shetried for a bursary or some kind of sponsor? If she looks for a job at M&S or McDonalds they give their support to students.

What a stressful situation to be in. Has your daughter spoken to the finance department at Durham? I think there are still hardship loans available from the SLC which are added on to your student loan - it used to be £500 per academic year, so might be worth talking to them? Good luck :)

Make a formal complaint to Nationwide (or at least get DD to do that) and ask that they remove the default from her record.
