Daughter may not be able to do her final year at Uni

Hello Everyone
Once again I am desperate for help and advice. My daughter as you may remember has suffered credit blacklisting by Experian (and the others I suppose) due to sharing a Natiowide Flexaccount with me which for various reasons show 7 missed payments. She cannot now extend her student overdraught because Barclays are point blank refusing and she now owes rent and has absolutley no money to go back for her second year exams and is in total despair as she feels she will have to give her degree up. She has applied to Durhams hardship fund once already and they gave her £75. I can probably give her £50 to go back with for food after all my payments but I really dont know what to do.
She is doing a really tough degree (Biomedical Science) so its no a life of drinking and dossing, and is the lab 9-5 everyday. I am going to suggest she try and get a job in Durham as she cant drive so any job here will involve me being a chaffeur but is ther anything anyone can suggestfor the next 2 months? Please.

  • I would have another go at talking to Barclays. Make an appointment with the bank manager, you go with her, with records of the problem shared account and copy of Experian report etc. and explain that it's not her fault. Going through the usual channels will get her nowhere as the normal staff can't override the credit rating.

She should definitely get a job near the Uni, it's good for getting a job after graduating anyway.

Can she apply to the hardship fund again? She should go to the student finance advisors / hardship office and tell them she literally may not be able to complete her degree due to finances. They may even be able to find her a few hours work in the uni. The uni probably will help if they realise how desperate the situation is.

When does she get the next instalment of a student loan? Will that cover all the rent she needs?

Thanks people good advice here. Her next instalment comes on May 5th Mikazaru and that is the last this year - it will cover her rent arrears but she is in arrears for electriciy etc as well as having no money to live on. I feel so guilty about all this - I just keep thinking if only.... which I know is really stupid but I dont want to seeher lose a potentially good chance of getting into med school because of my crass financial stupidity.

Sounds a good plan. Try to see someone who can make a decision not just put details into a computer and wait for it to say yes or no !

    Good luck

Is there any way she can push the hardship fund for more help? I had no help at all when I was at Uni since there was limited help but they may be able to help. I had a similar problem with my bank (Lloyds). They wanted me to pay back my student overdraft despite the fact that I was in my final year at Uni. Very stressful times. My advice would be to do what I did. Get her to switch banks.
Debt at worst: £33000 (Feb 2011). Present debt: £25610 (Apr 2012)
    Lloyds old (22.4%) = 560 (Dec 2012)

She can try. I was supposedly blacklisted but Halifax accepted me. I didn't even have to explain why I was switching.

Honestly, try the uni. I've worked in the sector and you'd be surprised at the various little funds they have stashed away. She needs to emphasise how difficult her situation is.

    Worth trying the university.

Durham is very sensitive to criticism of its elitist image and to allegations that only rich kids study there.
