Credit union for a loan - they may be more sympathetic.
Job over the summer - obvisouly not any good for the next 2 months though.
Check out Martins article on student finance - there may be grants/trusts she can apply for?

    Hi Elmer
She cant switch banks can she if she is on Experians blacklist?

There is no such thing as a blacklist.

    Her credit score is affected.

Is your daughter's next grant going to be swallowed up by her overdraft?

And has she spoken to both the University and Student Union Welfare Officers? They can do a lot more than hand out £75 which makes me think she has not explained the seriousmess of the situation to them.

This won't be a big or immediate help, but are you both doing surveys?
My daughter started when she was at uni and got me into them; the money and vouchers do add up over the year.

Hi does her electricity provider run a hardship fund where they pay off the arrears. Worth looking at.

OK so massive thanks to all of you who have chipped in today - we have arranged an appointment for Monday at the local uni branch of Barclays - partly because there was no one in our local brach until the 28th when she will already be back in Durham and also because the local branch said they would be more clued up on the student account side of things which is a fair point. I rang the student services and spoke at length to the lady there and she has told me who DD has to see when she gets back and how she has to be completely honest and open about the situation. She said the very rarely have anyone have to leave purely because of finance which is a bit of a comfort. I wonder if it would help if I sent the relevant person a letter stating I'm on a DMP and how family circs. have changed? Do you think this would help or just sound like bleeding hearts??
Everyone here has been so helpful over this Im all teary again - you know what its like - as soon as someone is kind you just crack; but boy am I glad you are ALL so very kind.

No harm in letting them know you have done everything you can to help your daughter, although no need to go through the ins and outs of your situation.

Daughter will almost certainly be asked about other sources of help when she is interviewed, so she can explain the situation then.

I think it's worth letting them know definitely. You don't need to sound like a bleeding heart - just set out the facts of the situation disapassionately. I'm sure they'll find a way to help. Best of luck.

    Evening
What a total waste of time trying to talk to Barclays about this problem. 'Sorry you have drive 30 miles for this but we cant do anything - you were misinformed by your local branch they can deal with this just the same as we can - its all on the computer. We'll lodge a complain about it for you but we cant help' Gee thenks Barclays really helpful and will I get my petrol money back and is 'As soon as they see the Experian recoed they will screen her out manually' the very best you can do. I am so very cross - these people make a fortune from all the people like us and cannot be bothered to lift a finger to give a potential future good earner £1500 which she is entitled to but didnt take BECAUSE SHE WAS TRYING TO FE SENSIBLE AND FRUGAL.
    Back to the drawing board...

can she sell any text books she doesn't need to the year below? can she ebay anything? can she tutor anyone? can she sign up to any psychology experiments for a quick cash injection? can she do some invigilating for extra money?

has she approached her college for help? they won't want to see finances get in the way. there should be funds they can access in the short term. since it's her final year, they'll know the negative impact of getting a job with lots of hours for the last few weeks.

i think she should visit student services and deal with that herself though - if she presents the situation they will be able to help but since she's an adult, they shouldn't be able to discuss anything specific about her case with you (anything more than advice on what to do). she should go and look for central help from the uni and from her college. you sending a letter would probably only help if it was in the correct format for the right fund iyswim - there will be procedures and forms and a few hoops but they're worth jumping through.
