They can come and go throughout life as well and most people who have one don't even know about it. They ae very very common as shown here and usually completely harmless.

The 'sore heart' could possibly have been a bit of heartburn?

My eldest son was diagnosed with a heart murmur last year, it was a bit of a shock I can tell you but further tests showed that there wasn't a huge problem and not to worry about it unless symptoms developed further (his aortic route needs to be checked periodically)....a further check 6 months later and the murmur could not be detected.

A couple of months ago however and after eldest had been having a few problems, he was checked again and the murmur is back, his ECG was abnormal and he is now on beta blockers (this is all connected to his EDS though).

However, it doesn't stop him doing anything..if he gets pain or dizzy, he rests for a short while and takes his beta blocker until it passes, he sees it as one of the milder things that is wrong with him (I think I must too, I forgot to put it down on a form once!)
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

I was told I had a heart murmur during a miscarriage when I was 24. Because I was stressed it showed up, but was told it shouldn't affect me and it hasn't. I was also told it was the strangest one they had heard :p

But a heart murmur hasn't had any real impact on my life!! :)

My dad was born with a heart murmur in the 1920's. He's not done too badly. Although it kept him out of WW2, he's lived a very active life and he's in his eighties now.

My third son was born with a hole in his heart which caused a murmur. It was operated on when he was three and he is now as fit as a fiddle. I wont say dont worry because I was really frightened but I will say that advances in medical science have come on in leaps and bounds and he will be well looked after x
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

You no longer need antibiotics with a heart murmur when you go to the dentist the guidelines changed several years ago.

Our DD was diagnosed as having a slight heart murmur when she was about 3... she kicked up such a fuss they didn't do the ECG, but the cardiologist had a good listen and was able to tell us it would not affect her at all. We only found out because she had a couple of instances where her bottom lip flashed a weird blue colour and we thought we'd better get it checked out. The lip thing has never happened again, her nail bed colour is fine, etc.

Glad we could put your mind at rest, hope his team wins their footie game.:D

The only thing I was told was to inform the dentist when you were having any treatment even a clean as any of the stuff they clean off could get into the heart...think they just give you an antibiotic before any treatment.

This is not necessary any more.

Recent studies have resulted in the conclusion that the dose of antibiotics is more risky than any problem that bugs around the mouth might cause.

The result is that NICE have now changed guidance so that dentists no longer need to give antibiotics to heart valve/murmer patients.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

1969 i was born with a heart murmur.

the only thing the dr's told my parents was to not let me do too much sports (remember this was 1969)

the only time it caused a little concern was during my pregnancy, (obviously something your son isn't going to need to worry about)

I'd say don't worry, but concentrate more on what the doctors tell you and not what we do.. none of us are medically trained to give you advice.
