  • please.. please..please .. listen and take note of the posts that people have been posting.....you must have been short before and borrowed off your sister and mother ( i am presuming this..as you say you owe them money )

this is how debt starts..... and it will snowball.....you need to start living within your means now..... otherwsie you could end up ..with big debt in the future...( i know... i have done it ..got the t. shirt... and the big debt .. to prove it )

first.. you got to tell you bf.. about the phone....that you just cant afford it....so you can either buy him something else... or give him a set amount towards the phone....

as for the new outfits.....i must admit i dont like borrowing clothes.. as i lent my best friend a expensive dress i had ..( years ago now ) and it was marked when i had it back... so never wore that again....
this time of the year.. charity shops are putting out the party ..glam ..clothing ..that they have put by all year... so go and have a look... you can seriously get some stunning items.... you will be suprised.....a nice black dress glammed up with accessories ....

the os way to solve your party outfit... would to improvise.. and re-style an old item in the back of your wardrobe....eg.. cut sleeves off shorten hem..... re work.. or take off collars etc....add new stylish buttons etc... i think you can see what i am getting at...

let us know how you get on and manage.....take care...

It looks to me as if you are going to buy the bf the phone regardless of the advice on here however, the problem is lack of funds until January. If you really MUST buy it why not paste a picture of the phone onto a card and write on it that due to lack of funds until January he will have to wait 'til then. Give him that Christmas day and if he has any conscience at all he'll tell you not to bother spending so much. Is he a student also or is he working?

I agree with everyone else about jazzing up an outfit you already have in your wardrobe. Or try Primark for something inexpensive. My daughter is a student and shops there regularly. A nice belt could change the whole look of an outfit.

How inconsiderate of your friend to have her 21st birthday in December :D
Have a good time, whatever you decide to do.

Hiya, I'm sure you're listening to all advice given and knowin things people are saying here are absolutely true, but I think you're gonna prob get him it anyways soo.. here's my thought on the other dilema.

Find a dress you already have, (pref long one) cut the bottom off to about thigh length, hem (or hand stitch after ironing, s'only for the one night!) voila latest season style dress AND a new look. For the rest of outfit, head to woolies for thickish tights (kids section if you are small like me!!) and then to New Look for some patent heels a bargan at £15 at mo.(& again, a staple fashion item at mo) if no New Look, Matalan/Asda have similar for £8-£12. Whole outfit should be no more than about £17.
My last tip is if you have longish hair and want a quick do.. (I swear I do this everytime I have an occasion, and usually 5 mins b4 I'm out the door...) tip head forward, pull hair into pony at crown, twist and cut in a straight line about 3 inches off end. Let loose, and voila an even layered 'new' hair do. (My bf always thinks I'm nuts doin this minutes b4 I go out the door but I swear, it works...Nicky Clarke suggested it!)

I was gonna suggest you try get his phone on a cashback deal so that you get it free on contract (and the contract free in long run) but a) dunno if there is one for it, and b) prob not a safe bet for someone who feels not great managing money.

Good luck n have fun (but at the least, live on recipes from OS thread throughout Dec!) x

    Hi Katrina,

The previous posters on this thread have all given you some great advice but you may get more help on the Debt Free Wannabe board, so I'll move your thread over there.

  • It's no good thinking that you've GOT to buy your boyfriend the phone or you've GOT to have a new dress, you haven't got enough money and you don't HAVE to have them, you only want them.

Please, please, please take peoples' advice and if your boyfriend has a face on over it, tell him to grow up and wise up.

my boyf wanted a watch for xmas, he saw the one he wanted, just over £120. I thought i could afford it spread over 2 months wages but having to pay ALL my bills this month i cant afford it. I was looking in a catalogue and they had it for £70 quid more, was very tempted but no. My boyf knows i am in a bit of debt so he said its fine and i can get whenever i have a bit more cash.

Please please please listen to the advice on here, the advice people have given has made me has changed my life and i can see a light at the end of the tunnel. DO NOT GET INTO DEBT FOR XMAS as it will escalate for the rest of the year.

I'm with everyone saying "don't buy the phone!" too.

You're a student, and it's a hard struggle to not end up completely in a financial mess anyway, without spending out this sort of money on presents. What I do now is at Christmas everyone gets about £10 spent on them MAX - I spend more on people's birthdays cos they're spread out through the year & it's 'their' day.

If your BF really doesn't appreciate that you cannot afford to spend this sort of money on him, then I'm afraid he's not a BF worth having - tell him you can only spend £20 or something, and say that he's not to spend more than that on you.
