Yes, Lidl bread flour is the one. We don't have a Lidl here, so when I go to a town which does have a branch, I stock up on 10 bags at a time. the bread rises well every time too.

sorry for the late reply; had a sick computer. no, using just plain flour is the same as using bread flour. i just follow the bread maker recipe, but use cheap plain flour. success every time.

Does anyone know where I can get cheap flour for bread making? At £1 for 1.5kg in Tesco it is no cheaper than buying bread from the supermarket. Whilst homemade bread obviously tastes better I need to save money too!

I think prices are fluctuating wildly because I bought 1.5kg of Tesco's own brand bread flour for just 68p Saturday before last (although have vowed to try Lidl's version next time). So the answer is to stock up when you find a good price.

500g plain flour, 400ml of buttermilk or plain yoghurt, 2 tsp of Bicarb of soda and a 5g fine sea salt. Makes the best tasting soda bread ever at around 56p a loaf.....Won't buy shop bread now ever (and we use Panny SD255 to make pizza dough and slicing loaves too....)

  • Just run across this thread looking for advice on using cheap flour for bread.

At the time of writing, tesco and asda are about the same price and theres not a lot of difference in cost between their budget brand (1.5kg for 52p) and white bread flour (1.5kg for 60p).

I'm going to try the budget flour next time just out of curiosity even though theres little difference in price.

Cost of a loaf from 500g of flour is about 30p! The yeast is a 1/3 of the cost so looking for a cheap source. The salt, sugar and water are negligible in cost but obviously you pay for cooking.

I use my magimix. Dissolve the sugar in the warm water then bung everything in the magimix and blend (usually do dry ingedients first and then pour in the water while blitzing). It even kneads the dough. It's soooooo easy. Just needs a knock back by hand after the first prove and you're away.

I'm going to start experimenting. Tiger bread next!

I use Allinsons Easy bake yeast in a little tin, 100g for 98p Asda or
Doves farm quick yeast in the orange vacuum sealed packs £1.15 for 125g. From Waitrose or Ocado.

I use 1 gram of yeast per 100g of bread flour.
Only 4g yeast for 400g flour. More than that makes my bread smell like beer.

I keep them in the freezer then when opened they stay in the fridge.
The yeast even works straight out of the freezer! I suppose you could keep it in the freezer if you wanted to.

I bought several packs of the Doves farm and it was only 99p per pack a year ago. This price increase to £1.15 is recent.
  • Aldi now do bread flour for 59p for 1.5kg. I have not tried it myself, but if it is anything like the rest of aldi products, it will be excellent.

  • Have recently started making bread again after getting oh intrested. I have problems with my wrists and got oh to do the kneading, (hate my breadmaker and mixer, have packed them away) now he does it all and insists its all organic. We are using only fresh yeast. I get a decent size block at the bakery in T's and then divide it into 1oz bits and freeze it ready to add to a 1.5kg bag of flour. You have to ask, but it costs 1p and I get about 8/9 ozs. hth
