The thing is, I can't believe they would be allowed on the roads - type-approval and crash-test regulations, that sort of thing - if they didn't meet some minimum safety regulations. And I would hope that those minimum regulations state that passengers must be able to survive at least a low-speed crash.
I don't know, I don't know enough about the regulations to say for definite, but I just would have thought that proper manufacturer-fitted rear seats would be as safe as any other seat in the car ?
The seat itself will be up to spec, I didn't mean it'd move, I meant the tailgate would.0 -

I remember in the 80's riding around in the extra seats in the boots of Volvo estates. Was great fun, staring at the cars driving behind.
I also remember simply riding in the boots of cars when I was a nipper where there was no room, with no regard for safety. As the youngest I got the boot! I enjoyed it!! :d
I suppose you cant really do that now!! :d
I used to get a lift home sitting on the back of a flatbed truck, back against the cab, staring at the cars behind.0 -

You can google the Zafira crash test in which a 7.5 ton truck rear ends it. However the test itself is fatally flawed because the rear headrests are lowered to provide an unrestricted view of the lorry hitting the car. It's poor sensationlist media because having the headrests in the correct position would have supported the dummies better.
There are loads of cars like the Zafira which are just as bad for having the rear seat close to the hatch - check out the latest Toyota Aygo & IQ/C1/107.
My sister was involved in a crash with a HGV which rear ended her. She walked out with minor injuries but her BMW 3 series had the boot rear seat area compressed into a tin can against her seat back. The man without a signature.0 -

Euro NCAP don't do a rear shunt test, they have tested a few front seats on how they perform for rear shunts in respect of whiplash.

The seats in the boot area are always going to be more vulnerable than 2nd row seats of the same car in a rear end crash.
The only car (if you can call it that) that I know you could quite easily fit proper rear seats to is a Landrover Defender.0 -
OK, thank you.
Seriously, I didn't ask if I can drive to Mars in my car but I sure am glad that you had some fun with my thread. Hope next time some of you cannot turn the washing machine on or change a nappy your missus will find it hilarious too.
I was reading through the thread and was starting to sympathise with you, until you went to a sexist rant. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

The worst seven-seater for crash safety, is the Grand Voyager. Once declared by Euro-NCAP as the least safest car they had ever tested; earning only one and a half stars. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

I'd treat myself to a weekend car hire of something big and plush, or take a taxi/bus/trian/tube
Simply because many years ago 'someone from work's wife' was taking their DD and friends out for the day, one of the DD's friends fell out of the tailgate and died.:( She was charged with it, apparently wasn't ever the same again after that.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19
