Doesn't mediation need at least two parties?

My ex refused to attend, and it was not compulsory then. I had to attend to see if i could claim legal aid. Was a waste of time for me, but proved to the court that I had tried to be reasonable. Basically they spoke to me about my options and what I could do.

I thought it was more normal for money to be sorted between nisi and absolute? Mediation is normally enncouraged as well - mainly to avoid stuff ending up in court that shouldn't. It seems pretty normal to me to be honest; just sit it out, you'll be fine.

OHs divorce was mucky, took over three years to be sorted out and cost him over 6K in legal fees (no kids, no assests, no money, he took the debt, marriage less than 5 years). Be thankful it's amicable, they can get really really vicious if one party decides to make it so. :o

I thought this also. I divorced my ex last year and I was told/advised that money matters had to be sorted before the divorce could be finalised. We had to attend mediation (that was grimmer than a grim thing at grim time), and we eventually had a Consent Order drawn up outlining access to the children and the financial settlement.

Only after that did we get the Decree Absolute.

My ex dragged his feet whenever he could. Took over a year and cost me £2.5k. Money well spent though

Thanks to everyone who responded. I am so unsure about whether things are going as they should.

A year since you started proceedings and its only just got to nisi? No, things aren't going as they should IMO. Your solicitor needs a rocket and you need a thorough explaination why this has taken so long. When I was in practice the usual time frame for what you are describing was 4 to 6 months. Its also very unusual for this time period to pass without the respective solicitors at least making some enquiries as to the parties intentions regarding financial matters, especially if there is a property to sell.

I'd be making a phone call first thing Monday morning if I were you. Hope you get something sorted really soon so you can move on :)

The divorce has advanced a slight step further. I attended mediation yesterday 20th April and it was exactly the same as last year, they were wanting basic information. Wasted £100 for that, as mediation is now charged. Hopefully the ball can finally start rolling with the ancillary relief.
The decree nisi has until 13th May and then will hopefully be made absolute. Just hope that the mediation does not last longer than that.
