Moving from Orange to Orange - Way Confused!

Hello all I was hoping someone could possibly explaine something to me as I am extremely confused right now, I have spoken to Orange and the Carphone warehouse and I'm worse of than when I started!
Ok, Let me explaine, I have Asperger's syndrome, Mild, but i still get pretty confused sometimes, and this is one of them times!!
Basically My contract with orange was up about 10 months ago but I wasnt really bothered about any of the phones so I just let it roll on. A few months ago a phone was released which i thought was pretty snazzy and was waiting to see if Orange updated there site. They didnt so I went looking elsewhere. Still with me?
Found one on the Carphone warehouse, with the bonus of if i order by tomorrow I can get cashback! So I want to stay with Orange because I have wonderful signal where I live, Been with them about 5 years, if not more, and have never had any problems.
So I ring Orange and explaine that I want this phone and they dont supply it, to which he said no and theres no release date with us. So I said I would like to move suppliers but would like to keep my number. Still with me?
So he said the only way to do that is to change my sim to PAYG - which he has sent to me a few days ago. When I asked what to do when I get the new phone, he wouldnt tell me and said I had to discuss that with the car phone warehouse.
So I rang the Carphone warehouse, I spoke to a lady and told her I wanted to order a phone but keep my number but i am coming from the same network. She told me I couldnt do anything, not even order the phone, before I got a PAC code. I said that i was advised to change to PAYG and she said yes, but you cant do anything untill you get a PAC code and I said not even order it? and she said no.
On the carphone warehouse website, when I got to order and it has the drop down to keep your number, it says to ring the network provider once the phone arrives to sort out keeping the number. So Im a little confused as to why I can't even order the phone?!
I am also confused as to what I have to do next. My sim should be arriving like now and I know I need to register it when it arrives. Do i also ask for a PAC code when i register it? Then say i order the new phone and it arrives next week, I then ring them (orange?) with the PAC code - is that how it works?
So the steps are (please correct me if im wrong!!)
1) Change to PAYG (done)
2) Order new phone
3) Register sim as PAYG
4) Get PAC Code
5) Get new phone
6) Ring Orange back(?) and give them PAC code
7) volia, I have new phone on Orange with my old number?
I know that I have to give 30 days notice on my old contract, and Im quite happy for it to overlap for the month, cos I want the phone and if possible the Cashback!!!
I know this is quite long winded but I just want to be sure that its right as the people on the phone were not very helpful and I really really dont want to change numbers.
Thanks

looks like you're nearly there - after your "step4" you need to get a PAYG sim form another provider (voda/tmob/virgin etc...doesn't matter who) - you then give your PAC to this provider and transfer your old orange number to this.
Then - new step...once this new provider confirms they have transferred your orange number in...you then ask them for a PAC.
You can then give this NEW PAC to Carphone Warehouse - so that they can arrange for your number to now be transferred back from (voda/tmob etc. whoever you decided to use) - back to Orange.
Hope that all makes sense - you had most of it down anyway

Oh none of them said about having to change to another provider, the guy at orange said that It can be done just transfering it from Orange Contract (Orange) to Orange PAYG (orange) to Orange Contract (cpw)
If I order the phone is there a time limit before I cant transfer the number across anymore - Because I want to order it tonight to get it delivered to the store for tuesday, probably pick it up wednesday/Thursday....but it sounds like the above is going to take a loooooong time!2018 WINS: Gin & Chocolate Hamper*Kids Shoes*Sudocrem Goodeybag*Malvern Spring Festival Tickets*Kids's Book* Bosch Soundboxx*Board Game*Friction Free Shave Subscription*Splash Out Ball*Blackberry Farm Tickets* Tickets to Chessington *Cat Treats*Seed Mix*Contour Next One *Majestic Wine Gift Card*£500 Lakeland Bundle*Shorn Wine Pouch0 -
The way you've outlined above it called a 'back door upgrade'. Getting a new customer deal while being an existing customer. They don't like those at all.
You'll have to move your number to another network and then back, that's the usual way of getting round it.
And a pac code is only for moving network with, it won't going to - from the same network.0 -
I just rang Carphonewarehouse, Braved it and the guy was really helpful. He said I can order the phone, register the new PAYG, When the new phone arrives ring orange to get the code and give it to the new people.
I might try orange again just to confirm this.
I can see what you mean with a backdoor upgrade, But I would stay with them if they offered the phone, but they dont have it at all for anyone, not even new customers. Its not even on there system as a planned release!! So thats the only reason Im going. Plus Im going to be spending more than I already pay - so its not like I'm trying to get a better deal, I just want that phone on an orange contract!

Ok So I rang Orange just in case this helps anyone else (I seem to be getting really helpful friendly people on the phones today).
He said You dont need to Port to another network, as im changing to PAYG, I can just port it back to the contract 24Hrs after I register it. He said it might take 30 days to come through the length of the cancelation period, but I can use the new phone on the temp number supplied and ring after the 30 days. I asked if there was a limit on the length of time, between having the new phone and being able to port my number and he said generally six months. He didnt seem to have a problem with me changing providers, as I explained they didnt offer the phone. All in all he was really helpful. A succesful day, many thanks guys for your input. Cant wait till the new phone arrives
