You'll need an external rooftop aerial if no digital reception with a set-top aerial, this is generally required for digital reception.
BT Vision is just Freeview with some on-demand content supplied by broadband, so that won't help you.
Failing that, use Freesat via a sat dish.

Set-top aerials really aren't great. Used one at uni for analogue TV and it was always snowy. With digital, you either get signal or you don't. There's no snowy half-signal like in the good old days.

Normally a flat would have an aerial point as shown in the pic above - do you not have one?

Sky would work but in most flats you either can't have your own dish or at the least need the management company/freeholder's permission to put up a dish. Blocks where you aren't allowed an individual dish normally have a communal dish.

Hi everyone thanks for all your input! I do have a built in one like in the picture.........suppose I should look for a lead to fit it. I have seen a few flats with sat. dishes so I might have to do that-but its extra money.

But first I will try and re-scan my telly and see if that works...........

You just want a standard RF aerial cable to connect the TV to the built-in aerial point. This will connect you to the roof-top aerial which will give MUCH better reception than the set-top one!

Your set-top one may even have a detachable cable you can use. If not, you want one of these:

(you can buy them in different lengths)

EDIT: hopefully it will give better reception anyway. My mum moved into a house and found the roof-top aerial point didn't work at all so she got Sky. Worth trying the roof aerial first anyway for the cost of an aerial cable. :)

As already advised, you'll most likely need to connect to a proper external aerial to get decent digital reception, why did you buy a set- top one when you could just buy a co-ax flying lead and get a decent signal from that?

B & Q at the moment have a satellite dish etc in a suitcase (I think they intend it for caravanning) for about £70. Would this work indoors does anybody know? If so, might it be an option?

Why would you install a sat dish (indoors or out) when you just need a length of co-ax from TV to wall socket costing about £1?
A sat dish needs a line of sight to the satelite, some people stick them on balconies, which really contributes well to the look of the property...

  • get yourself down to your local wilkinsons, i picked up some fly leads in there for about 80p each and they work better than the more expensive one i got online.

Might be worth checking your area too. If you go here and stick your postcode in the box on the right and tick the i'm in the trade and post the results here it will give people an idea of what reception you can expect to get. Definitely get a fly lead and stick it in that hole in the wall though it will improve no end, if you have to you can always boost that reception too

Try connecting it to the wall socket then if that doesn't work shop around for a good aerial company.

In my last flat there was no reception at all inside the building. There was very good reception when a roof mounted aerial with a mast head amplifier and a new aerial cable running into the house was fitted.

Go and buy an aerial fly-lead, plug one end into the TV socket, the orher end into the wall socket...then try re-tuning your TV.
