Issues with Orange credit checks

Basically coming to the end of my current mobile phone contract with O2 & looking to move to a contract with Orange for various reasons - (cost and level of coverage where I work.)

Anyhow Monday; went into a Phones for U looking to get a new phone on an Orange contract. Filled in the neccesary forms with the assistant and they then phoned up for a credit check. They were passed through to a referrals department who then informed them 'to try again in 24/48 hours'. No indication was given if the check had passed or failed.

Decided to try again today-Wednesday (after the 48 hours) and came up with the same result but the comment this time to try in 24 hours. The helpful assistant has agreed to try this credit check without me been present to save unneccesary journeys to the shop everytime!

Anyone else had experience of this?

Starting to wonder now that my careful 'save up for everything and pay in cash' outlook on financial matters is coming back to haunt me as I have very little 'credit rating' or is Orange just been extra careful with new customers?

I have a mortgage (which is my only debt), my credit card is paid off every month in full, a I have the afore mentioned phone contract and like I said I save up for everything I buy, so no HP on cars etc.

I think mortgage + credit card + mobile contract make more than sufficient credit history.

I think that the advice 'to try again in 24/48 hours' made no sense really. Every credit search listed in the file(s) has detrimental (pretty small though) effect on the credit scoring.

It is worth asking what CRA(s) orange use and checking your credit file(s).

Yes that was an after thought after I left the shop.

Going to see what tomorrow brings and see if I can esculate this if the outcome is unfavourable

Here's something interest that happened to me, I went into a Phones 4 U shop at Christmas to get a phone, same sort of thing referred, I was told to contact Orange, I thought maybe I forgot to pay an old bill or something as I was with Orange before a couple of years back, Phoned Orange up and they sold me the phone directly through them taking the business away from P4U:D

    A bit of an update.............

24 hours on and tried again, and again was told there was a hold on the referral pending contacting the customer (me!). Well that is news too me as no-one has contacted me.
Got me thinking though, last year I was subject to credit card fraud and my CC company (Tesco Bank) very kindly offered to let us join CIFAS and I believe that this is what is holding up the referral (could be wrong it has been known lol)

Anyhow trying to contact CIFAS by phone is as hard as trying to find a Yorkshireman with shallow trouser pockets :-)

Sent off an email and will see what becomes of it
  • Hi pld3009

We were experiencing some issues when performing credit checks on Tuesday of this week, which may have caused the delays you experienced. This issue should have been resolved yesterday morning, so you may wish to contact Phones 4 U again.

If you are told again to wait, without being given any reason, I'd be happy to look into this further for you. Orange Helpers can be reached either by Facebook or Twitter using the links below. Alternatively, you can contact our Customer Service Helpdesk on 07973 100150.

    I hope this helps.
