Thanks all, I think the general view is it's better to know so will try and broach with my friend - don't want her to think I'm criticising her for not saying something! Not sure what contact details the woman left but maybe she could just drop a note through the door or something.0

Agree with everyone on here. I've had 2 cats run over and both times someone took the time to call me so I could collect them and lay them to rest.
I now always stop for a dead cat. If there is a tag I will call the owner, if not I take to the vet to scan for a chip and even if they don't have that it's better than leaving them to rot by the road.
I once found a very mangled cat. I rang the number and advised them to send someone else to collect as would have been too hard to see their cat like that. I waited for 30mins and their friend arrived. was sad but very grateful.Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!0 -
I'd want to know. Ten years after one of mine disappeared I'm still wondering what happened to him. And looking - although he'd be a very old cat by now.0

I would need to know, definitely. Can I just add that the amount of people on this thread that actively go out of their way and deal with not very pleasant things, like giving someone the worst news, as well as handling the poor cats and taking care of them, has really touched me. To know that it's not just us as owners that care deeply for our own cats, but complete strangers that care so much too. Just wanted to say thank you really. Blimey, I sound sooooo cheesy lol0

Id definatley want to know. I found a cat that had been run over recently and tried everything to find the owner, so i could let them know, as surely in this situation not knowing would be far harder in the long term?0

I agree I'd want to know. My kids noticed a poster asking for info on a missing cat and while dog walking saw a cat matchimg the description dead at roadside. They contacted the owner, saying they had info but could they come in person has my son thought it wasn't a nice thing to say on phone. They then went, told the person and took them to the cat which was the cat they'd lost. They were understandably upset but grateful to be able to take the cat home to be buried. My kids were offered a reward but were reluctant to accept as it wasn't something they felt good about having to do. Needless to say I was very proud of the sensitive way my kids had handled the situation and the owner obviously was too.Frump to Fab - Solstice Sizzler

Personally I'd rather presume my cat had found a new home.0

This happened to me about 15 years ago, we had a cat, she went missing. Me and kids made posters and put up locally.
A neighbour knocked at the door and told us she had seen a dead cat on the road near us, had checked her collar and found our address.
We went down there, but council had obviously got there before us and she had gone.
Yes, we were glad we knew what had happened, kids were quite young at the time and it was somehow easier to explain to them what had happened than for them to think kitty had run away!
I think I would always want to know, rather than sitting at home wonderingwhoever said laughter was the best medicine has clearly never tasted wine

Yes, I would certainley want to know!!
A few years ago I was living in a rough area and my tortie cat went missing - Put up flyers, knocked on doors, notified all vets/rescues etc. She was a real home girl - totally out of character to disappear
It was upon notifying vets and rescues that I learned that a LOT, I mean an awful lot of tortie cats had gone missing in the area in a short space of time..... well youcan imagine what I started thinking! And I still don't know! I check in with the microchip company from time to time - just in case, and I would prefer to think she got taken in by a crazy cat lady... but it still upsets meI don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
