conned?

I applied for, and got, a Barclaycard 0% balance transfer, and set up my direct debit the same day. I work away from home, so haven't seen the statement, but they have phoned me and said I missed the first payment. I explained that I'd set up the direct debit, but they said they had 4 - 6 weeks to process it, and they hadn't done it yet. They said I had no longer got the 0%, but for failing to pay, was on the standard rate of 17 %. Have I been conned?

  • most new credit cards always state you need to make the first payment. before a direct debit is set up.

its a harsh lesson to learn, i would kick off..
but i don't think it'll get you far, apply for a new card and BT asap

If they agree that you arranged the direct debit and they haven't actioned it, I'd suggest you have a watertight complaint against them.

    Complain.

    Demand your 0% rate back.

    Ask for compensation.

Escalate to FOS if you don't get your way.
  • I recently looked in to applying for a Barclaycard (chose not to in the end) but I did notice that they do say the first payment must be made by you manually as they can not guarantee the DD will be set up in sufficient time to cover the payment.

You could complain & say that you will take your business elsewhere, but not sure if they would do much about it, plus that depends if you have got somewhere else you could transfer the balance to - 0% of course :)

I would say phone them up and complain but you would probably understand a saturday night drunk more then you would them.

Most. But Barclaycard set up my direct debit immediately and successfully took the 1st payment. I've been caught out by this sort of thing before so rang up a couple of weeks prior to payment date to confirm it would be taken by DD

No direct experience of Barclaycard, but I think it is usual for card companies to tell you when setting up a DD that you should make alternative arrangements to pay until the point where it specifically says on your statement that payment will be taken by DD (including the aomunt it will take and the date on which it will be taken).

If this is true for Barclaycard then I;d say it's worth a try appealing, but unless the statement told you that this would be the case then I don't think you have much chance of success and should chalk it up to experience.

The normal way they 'agree,' is by writing on the statement that they will pick up the direct debit. And until that appears on a statement, you generally can't take it for granted that they will take the DD, especially if it's on the very first statement.

After all, I'm sure we'd get quite a few miffed customers on here if on the statements they explicitly didn't mention taking it by DD, customer pays via debit card, then they subsequently did take the DD for the same statement. ("Thieving twonks at BarcWestWide took this month's payment twice...." etc.)

However the complicating factor in this case:

    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries
  • Also worth pointing out that DD is just a means to pay and regardless of any arrangements with the lender in this regard it is still the account holders responsibility to ensure payment is made.

    I wouldn't say that's a complicating factor atall.

If you work away from home, you know you won't see what is on the paper statement. Ergo you have a responsibility to check your account by other means - online or by telephone. Not only to check how payment will be taken, but also to keep track of your spending, ensure no fraud has been committed on your account, etc.

If someome wilfully choses to not check their account or statements in any way shape or form I have little sympathy for them I'm afraid.

  • This is a con. Barclaycard have done the same with me.

I set up a DD with Barclaycard this was shown on my account as being setup. It was also shown on my Barclaycard online account page. However the first payment was not taken. I then got a letter stating not paid ( no phone call ) I immediately made a payment and contacted customer services, waste of time.

Made a written complaint to customers services team in Northampton who are investigating my complaint reply due today 13th April. Didnt arrive in todays post.

Second payment went through by DD no problem.

Just received standard email that next payment due is £xx which I thought was above the 2.5% minimum payment checked on line to find interest has been added.

I have not been informed either by phone or in writting that this would happen!:mad::mad:

I'm currently writing another letter to the customer services team and to the CEO Barclaycard Europe David CHAN.

Once again I believe BARCLAYCARD are conning its customers and pulling a fast one.
