easyJet will love this, expect some marketing blurb soon about their flights from Manchester and Bristol.

Virtually no impact at Manchester. Ryanair, easyJet, Monarch, Jet2 all there and will be able to pick up most of the slack with most passengers not even noticing.

Cardiff is a whole other story, its decline of services and passenger numbers takes an even bigger nosedive. Wales' airport truly is over the bridge at Bristol. Sign of the times I guess.
  • a lot of people from wales use bristol because the flights are a lot cheaper from there. bmibaby are not cheap when you take the cost of baggage and check-in costs on top. no wonder people are not using them. plus tbi who owns cardiff needs to cut their landing fees if they want to attract new low-cost airlines too cardiff.

The landing fees issue at Cardiff is a myth. It is true that the published landing fees at Cardiff are among the more expensive in the UK, however airlines that operate regularly do not pay published rates. Each airline will negotiate its own prices with the airport as part of their contract arrangements to operate from there. None of flybe, Thomas Cook, Thomson, Aer Arran etc will pay anything like the published rates.

The sad fact is that Cardiff Airport doesn't have a great catchment area. Bristol has a far bigger catchment area than Cardiff, and Bristol's catchment is also wealthier than Cardiff's.

easyJet and Ryanair won't go to Cardiff. They have massive operations at Bristol, which Welsh passengers are more than happy to drive accross the bridge to use. Why take the mountain to Mohammed when Mohammed is more than happy to go to the mountain?
