I always thought it was what the Americans called grilling, but I could be wrong...

    What is Broiling?

I have googled it, it sounds like having the grill & oven on together:confused:

It's american for 'grilling', when the heat source is above the food.

An american 'grilled cheese sandwich' is a toasted cheese sandwich that's made in a frying pan (ie heat source below the food).

    Hi,
I'm American and our ovens don't have grills like they do here, so you turn the oven to broil to cook things at a high temp.

Depends if it's a American, Australian or an English cup! http://www.miketodd.net/encyc/cooking.htm

american ovens often have a broiler unit at the bottom, this is a pull out drawer that you'd put a broiler pan in (many people use it for storage vs cooking!) it is essentially grilling, only it's a little hard on the back! also american cookers have a broil setting which is more than 500F so it's very hot indeed

personally i prefer my george forman grill!

I haven't read the whole thread, sorry! It is 14 pages long :o

I have the Martha Stewart Cupcakes book and I'm a bit confused about the flour used. One particular recipe calls for "cake flour (not self-rising)" and also "all-purpose flour".

I always thought that all-purpose flour was just plain flour, but what on earth is cake flour?

Also, confectioners sugar. Is this icing sugar?

I think McDougals make a sponge flour, perhaps that's similar to the US cake flour.
