Recovering spendaholic, I bought a set of those cups at Tesco's a couple of weeks ago thinking that they would help with US recipes and then I read a UK recipe which had cup measures in, and I remembered I used to have a Tala measuring thing (a sort of triangular metal cup thing, standing on its point on a little base) which I think measured 'British cups'., and then I lost my nerve. I don't suppose it's critical if you are consistent, but do you think the Tesco cups are US ones or are they some odd UK hybrid ? Arrrrgh I shall have to go and measure some things now and compare them with Queenie's table. Can life get any more full of silly little complications I ask? (Don't answer that - of course it can, and doubtless will !)

Try converting UK & USA measurements. It's such a pain. Although I'm getting pretty good at the UK ones now. :D
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

An American cup measure holds 8 fl oz. Just look on your measuring jug ;)

If you don't want to buy a set, get a large yogurt pot, measure out 8 fl oz into it and mark it with a pen. Cut off round the mark and you have your own cup measure.

I've just measured a cup of liquid in mine and it is 8fl oz so I suppose that means it is an American cup.

Found these on an American recipe site. Can I use oxo cubes or Bisto gravy?

  • Hi, never heard of beef bouillon granules, but I do use Marigold bouillon powder. You can get it from supermarkets. It's lovely - not as salty as stock cubes.

    Hi pollyanna :)

We have a long running thread which helps members to find out what things are and what we can substitute when we're trying to make meals from American sites. I don't think these bouillon cubes are listed as yet, but the answers will be a good addition to the collection - so I've added your post onto it.

    Good luck. :)

I have a recipe that is written in american-english(?!?). Can anyone "translate" for me please.

    Jell-O
    light corn syrup

Also, they use cup measurements - what are these in kg/g or lb/oz?

    Thanks

Jello is really just a type of Gelatin.. and Corn Syrup is a light syrup which is very like our Golden Syrup.... you can buy a measure with US cup measurements from most hardware places..... but someone will no doubt come along who knows the exact weights etc.....

The main difference with American measures is their Pint. It is 16 Oz and ours is 20 Oz. (4/5ths of ours) It is same with the American Gallon.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
