Car Cleaning tips?

Hello

Just picked up my new used car, a ten year old vw polo. It's had a good service, apparently car wasn't used very often and parked up a lot by previous owner.

Want to do some cleaning at weekend.
I've noticed that along the inside bottom edge of the doors there is like black sooty deposits. I ran my finger on it and it looked almost like oil, someone said it's probably grease from the electric windows or just general grime build up after being standing.

What's best way to remove this without damaging paintwork?

Also, there are a few tiny rust spots ( I mean literally like a dot) on edge of back door, probably where door edge knocked something and chipped paint. Can't afford to get them done professionally just yet but want to stop them getting any worse and had read about painting clear nail varnish over them? Any ideas?

Thanks

Invest in an Autoglym kit with something for everything. May cost a few pounds but worth it for the quality/finish & it will last you a while as you dont need to use much to get a good result.

I'd invest in a decent quality wash mitt, a power hose and some wax. That should be enough to make a world of difference.

Just be very careful with the power hose on the rusty areas.

It may need a t-cut if the paintwork has faded though.

Spray the greasy deposits with a decent degreaser or neat washing up liquid and wipe off.

Any spots of rust would need sanding down, treated and repainted to get rid completely. Clear nail varnish won't work.

You could try a touch up kit from Halfords or wherever to try cover up the rust spots for a temporary solution.

They are just like nail polish, but in the colour to match your car.

The black dirt around the seals, windows and doors, is normal on most cars. When you have cleaned the car, just remember to open the doors and clean the edges too.
