Partial Transfer

Can I do a partial transfer of an ISA I've funded in a previous tax year? e.g. if I invested 10k in an S&S ISA last tax year is it cool for me to transfer 5k of it to a new ISA provider this year and keep 5k in the original ISA?

Numbers are for illustration purposes; I ask because my S&S ISA is currently fully with HL but considering moving a portion to a provider that's more friendly towards share dealing. I'm aware of transfer charges etc, just checking the legality of it.

I can't see why this wouldn't be kosher but just not something I'd heard of so figured I may as well check. Thanks.

The HMRC Guidance certainly permits partial transfers of previous tax year's/years' ISA funds, however ISA Providers are not obliged to offer or accept this facility - so you'd need to check the policies of both your current and new provider.

I asked HL about partial transfers out recently, since I'm thinking of doing the same. They said that they do allow them.
I can confirm that, if specified, it is possible for us to arrange a partial transfer out of a Vantage Stocks & Shares ISA to another provider. The charges for arranging a transfer out of our service as stock are £20 plus VAT per line of stock. A cash transfer can be arranged free of charge, however any dealing charges to sell the investments would apply.

I'd be interested in knowing who you transfer to.
  • Nice, thanks for the info teabag. Still considering my options for now; just wanted to be sure it was possible before investigating too strongly!
