... hi there ... here's hoping someone can help me :D

... I got a new phone yesterday (my fab N40:D ) with O2 on contract. I live in a rural area and I knew the signal strength would not be top notch as I aleady have an O2 PAYG ... but somehow the strength on the contract phone is virtuzlly zilch ... unless I balance on a chair hanging off the wardrobe and out of the window :eek: :D :eek: :D

... when I sit them next to each other the O2 PAYG has 3 bars strength and the O2 contract none ???

... how can this be ? :confused::confused:

... cheers for reading ... Dazza

    Since they're the same network both should have the same reception... I think then that it's just different RF performance between the two handsets. Nokia are generally well known for good reception, so your new phone could be faulty.

    You're within the 14 day period so you could return it if its performance is not up to spec.

    Is one handset using a 2G / GSM signal and the other a 3G / UMTS signal? That would be one possible explanation.

    If not, and thus they are both using the same signal, then the difference is probably down to the fact that different handsets have different sensitivities for picking up and holding onto a signal.

    The first thing to check is what happens when you swap round the O2 PAYG SIM with the O2 Pay Monthly SIM. If the situation is reversed then you have your answer.

    And not forgetting that signal strength indicators on handsets are not an accurate reading of what the signal strength actually is. They are just a guide.

    ... hey mate thanks for your post

    ... in my network settings there is a dual option or GSM or UTMS and mine was automatically set to dual ... have altered this now to GSM and the reception has picked up a little ... good enuff for texts and a brief 'out the window' call :D:D

    ... my 7610 didn't have 3G and being a bit of a techno phobe I don't really know what its all about :D ... I only really use the phone for text and calls so will it make much difference in me having swapped to GSM ?

    ... thanks so much for ya help mate :D

    ... cheers Daz

    GSM only is fine for calls and texts. It's better for battery life as well, so it's a pretty good option if you don't use any of the additional services or want faster internet browsing.
