We used a subsiduariry company of 'Apex' (a pretty big car rental company in NZ itself) called road trip rentals i think. they used the same cars that were initially used in apex but would be a couple of years old and as most people want to rent a brand new car we got it at a discounted rate. the car was in excellent condition, only a few years old and we had it for 2months, they even changed our tires for us half way though at one of their offices free of charge to ensure the car was safe. the service was great and the car got us around the entire north and south island without a bother at all.
It only had a cassette player and a radio which was fine by us as we played mp3's through mini speakers as we didnt bring cds. comfy reliable wee motor.

Hope this might help you
Oh and they threw in the ferry between the islands for us for free when we were collecting the car, an unexpected bonusTook a break from comping for about 10mths. I will be lucky from here on in:j0 -
These are many reputed car rental companies in New Zealand. But generally I approach the companies Newzealandcarsrental and Budget
whenever need to rent a car there. Both the companies have quite a nice variety of cars and the car hire rates are reasonable as well. It is also advisable to book well in advance to get better deals. Hope it helps.0 -
I was tried few times with ACE Rental Car, which is second tier company in New Zealand. The car is not bad, although a bit old, but still steady and not really very petrol consumed.
There is a discount on that can refer to thetravelparadise.net/p/advertisement.html0
