what do you expect for free?

there is much talk on these boards of a sense of entitlement within certain sections of the population - the idea that they expect to get things for 'free'. e.g. housing, schooling, healthcare.
yet i suspect we all expect certain things free of charge (or at least paid for by taxation).
take 'green spaces' for example. or footpaths. if you were charged on entry at your local park or to go rambling on a country path would you be angry?
what if you were charged for quality of the air you breathe? or to window shop in the local precinct?
all of these things cost something to provide and yet i suspect we all feel they should be free for us to use. don't we?

I don't expect them for free.....but I do expect them free at point of use: emergency services, emergency medical care, parks (whether small town parks/playgrounds or national parks), local roads, foot paths, access to ''public water''' like rivers and beaches in suitable places.
In teresting question I know there must be MANY more.....0 -
Green spaces. Water. Trees. Air. Education. Speech.
Healthcare at nominal fees.
Reclaim land given away by former Kings and Queens and give to the public.0 -

Agree. I would like to add defence too.
Policing shouldnt be free but should be a public service. It should be budgetted for locally. So if me and the people living on my road want to clump together and get a policeman to patrol up and down the street then we should be able to do this.
Those who cant/wont pay for their policing should get none except for pro-bono police work which can be charity funded and run.I am not a financial expert, and the post above is merely my opinion.:j0 -

Possibly some of them things could be limited to only those that do, or have contributed something.0 -

and things that we used to expect / get for free but that have since been charged for? why have we accepted these charges and would we accept charges on other currently free things (e.g. footpaths).

appologies ninky thats not a slur on you or the thread, like it. Just don't like extremist views and charging for the police is pretty extreme as is suggesting everyone has to contribute to get anything out.0

nothings free
freedom isn't free, it costs folks like you and meFaith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.0
