Card not charged for purchase? Help as i'd like to give the money to charity

thanks for the input all. Some good points and very true. I'll have a think about it and either do what bouncydog just said and put it into an account and leave it there for 6 years or drop my attempt at trying to be thoughtful towards a worthy charity and just contact the retailer and tell them.
Despite the high moraled replies on here (in general) I'd still be surprised if I put a vote on here how many people would actually contact the retailer. Few from my family friends, or workplace express that they would and they would channel it to a charity or try to keep it themselves!!!0 -
When I got extra money in my paypacket, i asked my colleagues at work.I'd still be surprised if I put a vote on here how many people would actually contact the retailer.
About 9 out of 10 said they'd keep the money. 1 in 10 said they'd fess up.
I fessed up but I don't try to pretend I am a saint.
I didn't want it on my conscience and wanted my employer to think well of me.
So I don't pretend I didn't have alterior motives.
Yes you will find a lot of moralising on these bords. I'm trying to be less judgmental.
I think your motives were good.
Why not keep it for 6 years and then give it to charity after the 6 years?0 -

It could be a fraud if he attempted to avoid payment by getting his card cancelled/number changed. s2 or s4 or both.davidmaiden18183 wrote: »drop my attempt at trying to be thoughtful towards a worthy charity

I think it's the coloured language you used which turned a the thread into a bit of a moral discussion.
I don't think anyone has a problem about being thoughtful towards a worthy charity.davidmaiden18183 wrote: »Despite the high moraled replies on here (in general) I'd still be surprised if I put a vote on here how many people would actually contact the retailer.
If it was a mistake by a small retailer where I could phone them up or go in and it wasn't a big hassle to do so, then I would (and have). If it was a large organisation I wouldn't see it any different in principle, but practically it could be quite difficult to speak to someone who could fix it. I would also be concerned that I could end up with a duplicated payment or order. Even if I didn't do anything about it, legally I would consider myself a trustee of someone else's stuff and wouldn't feel it was mine to give away.
In my experience, most people underestimate the honesty of others. I remember a survey some years ago. The question was: if you lost a wallet with £20 in it but the wallet had an address label and it was picked up by someone, what do you think that chances are of getting it back? Most people thought less than 25%. But when asked "if you found such a wallet, what would you do?", most people said they'd post it back!0 -
i'd be thinking "what goes around, comes around".
pay up!:)0
