    I'd use fruit juice - and if I remember correctly, the Germans do lovely fruit juices, so cherry juice or redcurrant juice (rotjohanisbeersaft, I believe!) would be really good.
    I always use vegetable suet anyway, it works better than the real kind I find. I did post it to a relative when she was in Germany!
    I think sultanas with some other dried fruit will work fine. You can use some fresh fruit - my mother always put chopped apples in hers. It didn't keep so well, but that's not a problem for you!
  • We prefer to use melted butter rather than veggie suet, no problem in mincemeat or xmas pudds.
  • As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread to keep ideas together :)
