Are you doing it on NHS? The reason I ask, is when I first went in and saw my dentist, she explained the options (I too was in a lot of pain) and said they could take it out, or do root canal work. Initially, she said that obviously it would be better to keep the tooth and it would take a couple of visits to do the canal work properly, then she paused, checked my notes and asked if I was a private patient, or NHS.............when I told her NHS she suggested I have it taken out and that was the best option

Honestly, it was quite unbelievable the difference in attitude from then on and I felt like I was talking to a used car salesman, she was constantly trying to get me to pay for things that was covered on NHS, because they make more money out of it..........the filling at the end being the obvious one. She told me that the filling I got on the NHS wasn't good and would only last a year, but the one she could do for £115, was far superior and would last longer and suggested I have that instead...... i say suggested, basically tried to force me into having and I had to really put my foot down for the other one, which to this day has been perfectly fine, I might add.

Sounds to me like you probably have an infection like I did, refuse to have it taken out and insist they do the canal work, there's no reason for them not to, other than they don't want to, because they make less money than doing it on private.

Yeah, NHS :( Having spoken to a housemate we realised we had the same dentist and he told me how much he likes this dentist because the first thing the dentist said to him was "I hate drilling so try not to do it". I reckon that attitude plus the fact he gets more money for private work is probably the reasoning behind his refusal to redo the root canal.
Luckily I have found 2 surgeries taking on NHS patients that have been recommended by friends so plan to switch over to one of them and make it clear from the outset that I want a new root canal! Also need a filling redone that was done by the current dentist... basically I had perfect teeth before I started going to him and now I have 1 filling and one root canal and pain from both. :( It's gonna hurt the finances :(
