How to get compensation on delayed Virgin Flight

My husband's virgin atlantic flight from london to lagos was cancelled due to technical fault on thursday night.
He was put in a nearby hotel overnight as the delay was about 18hrs
Unfortunately he got to Lagos too late on friday night to be picked up. However because elections were scheduled for the saturday, movement was very resctricted which meant he had to spend the night and most of today at the airport
What kind of compensation would we be entitled too
please note that the flight to Lagos is about 6hrs
