Can I get out of my contract? O2 Coverage

I moved to a new house on Monday, to a new area that's not really rural, 3 miles from Brighton town centre. The problem is that my o2 mobile won't work at all and I have absolutely no coverage. Nothing. If I want to get even one bar I have to drive up the road for five minutes (timed as went for a drive to order pizza for dinner on moving day!). I have checked the o2 website in relation to network coverage, current and future coverage shows my postcode as a blackspot.

My question is this - can o2 reasonably expect me to continue with the duration of my contract (11 months) if my phone is permanently unusable whenever I'm at home? If they were planning to increase the coverage then that might be different, but as it stands, they are not. They are providing me with a service that due to no fault of my own, I cannot use!

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated, I want to call them to see what they say but I have a feeling they may say 'tough' and I have no option but to continue with my contract. I signed up for another year as of 6th November…if I had known I would have gone with a network with better coverage in my area - well, any coverage!!

  • You will have to continue your contract, as it's a legally binding agreement. If it was this easy then people could "move" to a blackspot area and cancel their contract, o2 may lose lots of money if people did this just to get out of a contract. It's not really o2's fault that you don't get reception in your area as they don't claim to have 100% coverage do they?! Plus you said that you said that you saw that it is a blackspot in your area.

As your in month 11 of your contract it might be time to write to cancel your contract and move networks. Try and get some free PAYG sims from the freebies board to try out the service reception before getting another contract.
  • I just spoke to o2 and told them my problem. As suspected, they can't disconnect me, I have just just gone over my 14 day cooling period with my account. As of yesterday! So I said fair enough...what do you suggest I do as I can't use my phone between the hours of 5pm and 8am. Their suggestion, you can't do anything. My current tarrif is £25 for 500 mins, 200 texts...if I dropped down to the lower tarrif of £19 I'd only get 50 mins and 150 texts. But I can't really use it during the day when I'm at work either!

Soooo frustrated ggrrrrr. That's over £200 I'm going to spend in the next year on something I won't get much use out of!
