we have been making dens inside and out.

They have now just gone to the shop on their own for the first time, OMG I am scared.

Bless, how did they get on? My DD used to love going to the shop for me for milk etc when she was your kids' age - she's not so keen now though unfortunately :rotfl:.

Fine, apart from forgetting to get mummy an ice lolly too lol, they had to go back for mine lol.

I was so scared but they were fine. There are no roads to cross but its round the corner and down the road. About a 10 minute walk each way.
Shut up woman get on my horse!!!

How are they in the kitchen? I used to love 'inventing' sweetie recipes as a kid - cue much melted chocolate mess with sweets mixed in...

Perhaps they might be able to follow a simple lunch/supper recipe with supervision? Something like fish fingers, oven chips and salad, perhaps? Or using a jar of sauce to make dishes like spaghetti bolognese / macaroni cheese etc? I am sure Daddy would be very proud to eat supper made by the kids!

Bread dough is quite easy to make, and they might enjoy the kneading part of it - you can use it as a base for normal bread loaves, rolls, sweet buns, pizza, breadsticks etc. Try little strips of it rolled thin, stabbed with a fork and sprinkled with cheese. Bake until bread and cheese are crispy - it is yummy!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

How about cutting up newspapers and magazines to make random stories - a bit like those kits where you have magnetic words stuck to the fridge and make sentences with them - that's nice and cheap!

We used to play fish and chip shops - again with newspaper - and sell paper chips and paper fish, made in a paper frying basket.:)

Spies - sending secret messages up and down the stairs in code... are they up to a bit of decoding yet? You could send them messages like lunch is ready, or bring me a can of juice!!

I have to say that when my kids were 7 and 8 they played out in the garden or in next door's garden... No amusement necessary if you give them some chairs to make a den and some old blankets/sheets to cover it with. If it rains, let them do it indoors!

ditto, when my boys were young I could spend a fortune on the latest toy or gadget, but the minute I got out an old curtain, draped it our 4 chairs they were happy bunnys, and of course they thought they couldn't be heard, some of the things they talked about made hair curl :)

Dens are great, playing shops, maccyDs, Post office. Baking is good, so is jewellery making and arts and crafts.
storytelling can be fun - but you have to MAKE UP THE STORIES! one person starts .......'One day (make up a name) goes to the bus stop/airport/train station etc and boards a bus etc to............the next person makes up a destination and the (name) gets off there and meets ...............the next person takes over - and depending on their imaginations, this could be wild! could be a panda, a vicar, a friend and then you make up an adventure for them!

sorry you are sofabound - hope you get better soon!

oohhh making mixtures. My DS used to go mad for making these when he was around 8. Gather the ends of all the toiletries you have and create a new hand cream.

I guessed other peoples kids would be too much for you at the min, but are you able to do any 'deals'. I have Ds's friend sleeping tonight, snd keeping him till his mum comes home from work tomorrow, but have asked if she can return the favour either May 1/2 term or 1 of the weeks in the school hols, when I know I'll need childcare for mine
  • Have an indoor picnic - if they can they could chose sandwiches to cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Turn it into an adventure with perhaps a travel book/magazine and play desert islands or similar.

You could do this more than once with each of the children chosing where you are shipwrecked. It could take a morning just setting things up with cushion rocks etc. while you sit on the beach and watch.
