Can you cancel the HD on sky?

Looking at signing up to sky for tv following a bad day with virgin (a long other story).
The sky + box is £49 + £30 connection but the sky+HD box is free so long as you pay the £10 per month for HD channels.
If I go for the second option then cancel the £10 and the HD channels after a month, will it be the same as having the first box, which presumably still records and everything?
My virgin story is this:
Been with them 18 months, no longer tied in, had XL TV, L broadband and phone. Rang today to change tv package to L to save some money. The woman told me I would now be paying £5 for HD as this was included free with XL package but not on L. So I asked her to cancel that as well. I asked if they change the box and she said no, we just stop delivering HD channels to your address. So i said fine and it was actioned.
Only found out later tonight that in doing so I have now lost use of the V+ box with regards to recording, pausing etc. Still have the channels I've paid for but no other function. I'm really annoyed as she didn't tell me that would happen. I phoned back and was told i had to pay a re-connection fee of £49. I said that it wasn't my mistake, it was theirs and they basically couldn't care less. He said that I asked to have the V+ taken off, but I said I only asked for the HD to be taken off and she didn't tell me the V+ function would go. Said a supervisor would ring back but didn't. I'm really upset as all my kids films were on there and now its all gone. I'm also annoyed because we now have no other way of recording anything because when they installed the virgin tv, the channels on the dvd recorder and video got lost and we can't work out how to record off them now.
Sorry for very long moan. Any advice on the sky question appreciated. Going to phone back tomorrow and cancel.

Sorry, the bit I highlighted does not make sense. If you sign up as you posted; The sky + box is £49 + £30 connection but the sky+HD box is free so long as you pay the £10 per month for HD channels.
Then you cannot cancel the HD pack UNTIL the initial 12 months is up.0 -
It only asks you to pay the initial £10 then I'm assuming you can take it off, just as you would presumably be able to do with extra channel choices. I think it is the basic subscription that ties you in and not all the extras too but could be wrong. That's why I asked - really to see if anyone had done this themselves.
Has anyone done this themselves who can advise?0 -
Just phoned virgin and got a really helpful person who has kindly put my v+ back on at no charge and I've got my recordings back! So don't need to know about sky now as my virgin deal is cheaper anyway. I was going to act on principle but glad I don't have to! 'thinking of leaving' is def the way to go - they're the only people with any authority.0
