Stop emailing. Stop worrying about 'looking through your books' - not your concern. YOU HAVE A RECEIPT.
Choice. Avoid animosity and say goodbye to your deposit. Or insist on your deposit being returned. Don't get into discussion. Or email. Don't get sidetracked by 'tracing' the money.
Just write a letter and ask for it to be returned. If it is not, sue him. You'll win.0 -
i know. hmmmm i dont knwo what to do he has emailed me saying i should look through my books and check again and that hes knows he should have put it in a deposit scheme but becasue it 'would have cost him' he didnt

That is ridiculous! Seriously if he doesn't respond to a simple letter, you need to do something about it. He has your money! Plus if you do ever move out, by law he is required to return your deposit to you within 28 days of you leaving. So he would be in even more trouble if he doesnt get it sorted sooner rather than later.0

Plus if he tried to make you leave after you requesting your deposit back, he'd be digging himself even deeper. And if you really want to hack him off, look up squatters rights lol0

If you're happy to let it go then thats your choice, i know how stressful it can be
But as long as you know you have the upper hand regardless! Good luck

You said your mum helped with the deposit - does she need it/want it back? Is it a lot of money to her?
It's not right to let the LL get away with this, but TBH you don't sound like you want to go through this ordeal for £200 and end up homeless.0 -

You should be able to fill them in retrospectively and see whether there's a gap. Have a look at your bank statements around the time you paid the deposit. Find the numbers and amounts of the cheques cashed just before and just after you paid. If all the stubs in your cheque book have a corresponding entry in your bank statements then either you didn't write him a cheque or you did and he cashed it.0
