Wireless

Options
Tearing my hair out! Am with TalkTalk and happy with our phone package. However, broadband connection drops frequently and wireless reception in our three-bedroom house is bad. Reasonable connections can be had in the two rooms next to and on the same floor as our desk top computer and wireless router. Elsewhere, it is hard to get and when we do get a connection, it drops even more frequently than the broadband.

What to do? Is it a lack of range. Is it true that TalkTalk now have too many customers using their cables and so 'overcrowding' is causing frequent drop-off. I know internet connection in my area and to my house is strong.
I need advice? Do I change provider? Will it resolve the problem?

I'm with talk talk, have been for over 2 years. My laptop picks up a strong signal from the wireless router all over the house - but my smart phone really struggles and keeps dropping the signal.
Have you tried more than one laptop or wireless device?
  • Thanks for your reply. Yes, have tried a smartphone, laptop and a quirky wireless enabled blueray player. All struggle and have the same reaction. Hence, why I am now wondering if the signal goes far enough. I have also wondered if strong signals from neighbouring houses are interferring. Have asked TalkTalk the latter question and they say no... but I wonder?

Only thing i can suggest is updating the firmware on the router - there should be instructions on-line somewhere. I've done this in the past without any problems. If that makes no difference then either ask Talk Talk for a replacement or buy your own - they aren't too expensive. It's extremely unlikely that the other wireless networks will be interfering with yours.

Log into the router interface and change the wireless channel, probably a neighbouring network on the same channel causing interference.
    Not any fault of TT's.

Download inssider and run it on a laptop, that will show you what other wireless networks are around and on what channels, you could then move your channel to a less congested one if that is the problem.

Why's that then? It's a very very common problem.

Jeez, ok ok - it's something i've never come across & i've sorted quite a few wireless problems for friends & family.
