    Happy New Year

Over Christmas and New Year we hosted lots of guests, many of which stayed overnight or 7 nights in the case of my parents and Grandmother. The house is never as ready as I would have like but better than I feared it would be when they arrived and whilst they were here we managed to maintain what we had all ready done and make a little bit of progress, without much effort nor masses of time.
Last night when our guests arrived for new years eve the dinning room & table was clean and tidy for playing board games, the kitchen table was clear all it except some of the food for the evening, the only thing on the hob was a pan of fresh soup for people to help themselves to, the kitchen its self was tidier than usual including space to prepare & serve drinks, the living room was mess free so we were all able to move through to there later in the evening without a problem, hall, landing & stairs were clutter free so we could move around without the usual obstacle course and the rooms our guests were sleeping in were made up ready for them, this is some kind of miracle for us.
I am recording it here so I can look back in the future and remind myself that it is possible even for us:D. For a change we didn't need spend all the hours since my parents left on Saturday lunch time until our next guests arrived Monday evening working flat our to try and bring order to the chaos. The house is far from perfect, we currently have 1 room which is a dumping ground which we refer to as the room of doom, but we are going in the right direction, lets just hope when we take the Christmas decorations down on twelfth night that they actually make it to the loft this year :o

I am going to try posting regularly as I generally make better progress when I do. This should also be easier as today OH managed to sort the problem of the wifi not getting to all rooms, due to the thickness of our stone walls :j

Emm, I agree with your last two posts.

I think "storage" can cause, or at least maintain, as many problems as it solves. I believed I'd organised my house because everything fit into boxes but it hadn't solved the problem it had just put it into boxes. And because things were in boxes then in my mind it meant we needed to keep it, why would I have put it in a box otherwise?!? So when we were moving and I started going through the stuff of course there was a ton of stuff that just needed to be removed from the house rather than living in these procrastination storage areas.
  • Hello Darlings :)

THE FLAT IS CLEAN! I REPEAT, THE FLAT IS CLEAN...well, Clean enough to look decent anyway :rotfl:

Hi Sashanut :D Nice to meet you :D

Baileys Babe Sounds like you've had an incredibly busy couple of weeks/days!! Have you sat down for your "You-Time" with a nice cup of tea and chocolate digestive yet?

Emm-in-a-pickle Well done you! :D Cook books round here are edging to the end of the shelving space now, So going to have to sort through them to give them nice new warm homes :D. P.s Storage annoys me to no end!!

    Hope you're all well :)

Thought I'd post here as a reminder to myself that my house is clean! It feels like we have been doing continual DIY since we moved in over 3 years ago, and I have far too much stuff anyway (and I need still need a major clothes/shoe clear out and lots of filing to do), but I made my OH get the kitchen finished by inviting people round for NYE and I cleaned/ tidied for about 3 days so for once our house looks lovely. OH kept commented that it felt like we were in someone else's house, eek. So now I just have to maintain it!

I think my new year's resolution will be to make sure I put clothes away as soon as they are dry. I am a nightmare for just using the airer/ washbasket as a wardrobe.

    Hi all:j

Nice to meet you hopefulmoneysaver94:wave::wave:Glad your flat is clean.........eventually I hope to get there:eek:

I suppose now I've started I better de-lurk properly - we moved into this house about 15 years ago - and moved none of our old stuff with us:eek: So, all the junk that has accumulated over time has been acquired since then. Originally I battled on my own, with approx zero results, but then DH finally chipped in & has been helping, albeit only infrequently. Have done some clearing due to Christmas, so now only one downstairs room is a no go area. Ok the kitchen isn't great, but it's nice to be able to open the front door without a panic.:rotfl:Well, I say that but we have 3 very dirty dogs, the excercise area is like one big mudbath & I can't see it getting better just yet. So I have a mop/cloth always on the go, with very little result

Upstairs however is a different story, bathroom OK but all other rooms pretty bad & one room is stuffed full of junk. So, today I have been in there, not for long, but done a bit of de-junking & cleaned the windows (yuk). I will vac the floor space now discoverd. On the upside found a pair of wearable ankle boots I'd forgotten I had, plus a Baby Born doll (my daughter just turned 22:eek::eek::eek:).

  • penguingirl Oh I'm terrible with that too! The clothes horse is holding all mine and OH's clean clothes right now as the Canvas wardrobe is torn to shreds, and the cats tend to think I've made a nest for them to sleep in if i fold clothes up and put them on the wardrobes shelves (Thank you cats!!) so living in a studio, We've no place to put clothes :( Popping over to Tes!o to get some of them clear storage boxes (oh how i hate them!!) for the clothes to be put in (it'll make a change from the show box all the socks are in!!:rotfl:)

sashanut It wasn't easy! It took me a full year to even touch the main room (I moved in with OH, who had been living here for two years previous with depression) but I got there :D (Thanks to an unscheduled flat inspection, which left me with just a day to clear 40 bags worth of rubbish out ) Now I've just got to keep on top of OH's horrible habit of thinking the floor around his desk and the bed is a bin  But You'll get there :D We always conquer the enemy! :D

  • Morning Messies.
BB, well done on getting straight in time for your visitors AND keeping on top of things.
I notice that when `civilised` visitors stay (eg DS`s GF) they don`t trash the place, and the regular inhabitants also make an effort not to, so that helps. When less `civilised` (or do I mean not yet house-trained?) folks stay over (eg DS`s mates!) the opposite applies!
PenguinGirl - I do that too, except I don`t use an airer, it`s all coat-hangers in upstairs doorways!
Sashanut - welcome, it`s always lovely to `meet` a de-lurker! Are you keeping the doll? I still have DS`s original `potty` that was found in the loft a few years ago when we cleared it for re-insulation, and I figured it can stay as it`s been around FORTY years already!! Also, OH & I still have our original battered old teddies, and they`re staying too. There`s plenty of real rubbish to shift, they can deal with the rest when I fall off my perch!
HopefulMS, do you really have 8 ducks?

    Messy Status Report-
I have a big heavy sack of mags in the hall, ready to go.
Bins are full, have been out on the pavement since Monday but binmen still haven`t been, so I`m not on a general rubbish-finding mission today - need to save the nooks & crannies of bin-space for `urgent` rubbish till they get emptied...
Yesterday I concentrated on the magazines, but found loads of old paperwork, so there`s a couple of hours` worth of shredding on todays agenda. (I have another empty sack ready for the shreddings)
My Cunning Pan for today is to concentrate on paper waste, which can all go to the village paper skip, rather than drive a couple more miles to the big recycling dump.
The shredder stops for a `rest` when it gets warm...I`ll report later when I`ve filled another sack!

Emm-in-a-pickle I do :) Kind of bad news though, we hatched 6 eggs that turned out to be all male so we have to get rid of four so they don't over bare the two females we have.. We've got two runner ducks crossed with something else and the 6 males are pure bred Indian Runner ducks :) They look like baby penguins:rotfl:

  • HopefulMS- thanks for sharing the pics. They are so cute... I`m glad my DGD`s not here or she`d be pestering "can we have a duck"!! Hope you find good homes for them.

I`ve filled a charity sack with shreddings!
There are now 2 sackfuls in the car ready to go to paper recycling bin, PLUS a pile of old telephone directories, Damart catalogues (dunno why cos I`ve never bought a Damart thing in my life!) I`m not taking them yet though, as I`m still up fpr a bit more shredding. I`m on a roll, so while shredder cools off I`m going to find more carp to shred...
